Daniel Dubois laid down the gauntlet to his fellow heavyweights when he scored an emphatic stoppage win over Fabio Wardley earlier this month, and now Dave Allen has named the only man whom he believes has a chance of putting an end to the reign of ‘Triple D’.
Dubois and Wardley went to war five months ago, with Dubois emerging as the victor after a gruelling 11 rounds and becoming a two-time heavyweight ruler, but Wardley was quick to activate his rematch clause following the Fight of the Year contender.
When the pair met for a second time, the punishment was compressed into just four minutes of action and it was all one-sided, as ‘Triple D’ delivered a brutal beatdown and retained his title via round two knockout.
Having witnessed that performance, Allen praised Dubois’ display on his YouTube channel, but went on to admit that he believes WBC heavyweight champion Agit Kabayel could give him a run for his money.
“Kabayel, for me, is the man to beat. I think he’s the guy. He can do a bit of everything. He is a good body puncher, he is tough, he can punch a bit. So, Dubois-Kabayel, who would I favour? I think that’s a 50/50.
“No outcome there would surprise me. Dubois’ jab is incredible, Kabayel would have to take that away from him. He couldn’t afford to take the shots that he sometimes takes, but Kabayel has the body punching, the toughness and the cleverness, as well.”
Continuing, Allen then went on to declare that Kabayel is the singular heavyweight whom he thinks would have any genuine chance of defeating the reigning WBO heavyweight king.
“At the minute, Kabayel for me is the only guy that [Dubois] could box next and I would say, yeah, he could win this. The rest of them, Dubois is a big favourite.”
Dubois is being targeted for a return in February, with Joseph Parker understood to be his most likely options if a unification against the undefeated German can’t happen immediately.
