Cristiano Ronaldo has been fined £215 and suspended for 30 days by the Portuguese FA after walking out on the national team following a row with manager Jorge Jesus.
The federation’s disciplinary council said it had upheld the charge against the 41-year-old forward in full and imposed a fine of €255 (£215) after he accused Jesus of twice breaking his word about his role after he was an unused substitute against Norway last month.
The official statement read: “The disciplinary council – non-professional section – of the Portuguese Football Federation hereby decides, in the present proceedings, to find the charges fully substantiated and, consequently, to convict the defendant, Cristiano Ronaldo dos Santos Aveiro, for committing, on a single occasion and with intent, the disciplinary offence provided for and punishable under Article 160(1) of the RDFPF, and to impose upon him, as a result, a 30-day suspension and, additionally, a fine set at €255.00.”
When explaining the fine, the statement said that the Portuguese FA took into consideration Ronaldo’s contributions to football as a factor which worked in his favour.
“With regard to the mitigating circumstances of having rendered significant services to soccer and having received praise for sporting merit, the defendant Cristiano Ronaldo submitted his sports resume, including the awards and recognitions he has received throughout his career,” the statement added.
Jesus denied making any agreement with Ronaldo but left the door open for his return following Portugal’s 2-1 win in Oslo. However, the forward returned to Saudi Arabia to train with Al-Nassr before releasing a near 2,000-word statement hitting out at the head coach.
Ronaldo later apologised for failing to acknowledge supporters after the Norway match and for leaving his team-mates, saying he remained available for selection after serving any punishment arising from the incident.
Portuguese FA president Pedro Proença had said that everyone within the federation wanted Ronaldo to return to the national team once the matter was resolved.
