It's hard to be upset with the way the Los Angeles Rams' defense has performed through the first six games, ranking fifth in the NFL in yards allowed. Trent McDuffie has exceeded expectations, as has Jaylen Watson, and the safety play has been excellent as well.
If there's one thing that's lacking, it's takeaways. The Rams have forced just six turnovers all season, which is tied for the seventh-fewest in the league.
Even worse, the offense isn't taking advantage of those limited takeaways. According to NFL Researcher, the Rams only have six points off turnovers this season, which is the fewest of any team. All but three teams have scored double-digit points off turnovers, with the Dolphins and Cowboys joining the Rams as the only three teams with fewer than 10 points.
The offense in general has struggled to score points, ranking 11th in scoring despite leading the league in total yards. It doesn't help that the defense and special teams aren't setting up the offense with short fields as often as other teams are, with Los Angeles ranking 29th in average starting field position.
That has forced the Rams to sustain long drives in order to put up points, which has led to the disappointing scoring stats.
If the defense can start taking the ball away more and giving the offense shorter fields, the Rams should see an uptick in points. This week is a golden opportunity to force some turnovers against the Chargers team that leads the league with 15 total giveaways.
