Christian McCaffrey is climbing the San Francisco 49ers’ record books in a hurry.
McCaffrey rushed for two touchdowns in San Francisco’s 23-17 win over the Washington Commanders on Monday night, giving him 37 career rushing scores with the franchise. According to Pro Football Reference, that ties him with J.D. Smith and Steve Young for fifth in team history. He entered the game tied with Hugh McElhenny at 35.
Only Joe Perry (68), Frank Gore (64), Roger Craig (50) and Ken Willard (45) have more.
The two scores also pushed McCaffrey to 55 total touchdowns in a 49ers uniform (37 rushing, 18 receiving). That ties him with Vernon Davis for ninth on the franchise’s all-time list. George Kittle (57) is two touchdowns ahead of him, and Gene Washington (59) is four ahead.
McCaffrey has reached that total in just 54 games with the 49ers. His 6.1 points per game are the highest of anyone in the franchise’s top 10.
Against Washington, he carried 16 times for 64 yards and the two touchdowns. He also caught nine of his 10 targets for 53 yards, finishing with 117 yards from scrimmage on 25 touches. McCaffrey has 350 rushing yards and seven scores this year, including one rushing touchdown in five straight games.
With Mike Evans expected to miss more time with Achilles tendinitis (an ailmant McCaffrey knows much about), the 49ers will need to rely on their veteran running back more in the weeks ahead.
