The Los Angeles Rams entered Sunday's Week 6 contest as 12.5-point favorites and in desperate need of a win over the visiting Arizona Cardinals.
Leading 16-15 with under 40 seconds left, Cardinals quarterback Jacoby Brissett connected with receiver Jalen Brooks for a 21-yard completion over the middle. Rams cornerback Josh Wallace grazed Brooks on his way to the ground in a moment that seemed benign at first. Earlier in the game, Los Angeles lost fill-in kicker Blake Grupe to a devastating injury.
However, the Rams player was flagged 15 yards for an unnecessary roughness penalty. A few plays later, Arizona kicker Chad Ryland connected on his sixth field goal of the day to give his team an 18-15 lead as time expired. Many cried "rigged" online.
"Rams lose thanks to a bogus 15-yard roughing penalty," tweeted former ESPN personality Skip Bayless.
Many fans agreed. "The NFL is rigged, and the Rams continue to implode. Both can be true," one tweeted. "Rough to lose games like this multiple times and have a rhythm. McVay does need to take some accountability for this. More bad football from the league and this team."
Rams coach Sean McVay didn't make excuses in his post-game press conference, instead saying, ""We won't win a game unless we figure out how to not beat ourselves."
Still, fans cried rigged on X." I'm no Rams fan, but that was the worst personal foul I've ever seen in my life In no world should that have been a 15 yard flag," another said.
"This is such an unspeakably bad decision. The Rams have been the architects of most of their own problems this season, but they’ve also been mercilessly f----- by the officiating all year," a different fan wrote.
In Week 3, the Rams lost to the Denver Broncos on Sunday Night Football after a pair of bang-bang defensive flags later. Broncos receiver Pat Bryant later revealed that he intentionally tried to bait the official into giving the flag.
The loss drops Los Angeles to 2-4 and 2.5 games back of the San Francisco 49ers in first. Quarterback Matthew Stafford was good-not-great against the Cardinals, completing 25 of his 33 passes for 222 yards and two scores.
His six-yard strike to tight end Colby Parkinson put the Rams up a point with under a minute to go. Star receiver Puka Nacua, after catching 17 passes a year ago, caught just six passes for 80 yards on Sunday.
