6 Phil Parkinson replacements Wrexham AFC must eye ASAP as sack calls grow

Wrexham have had a difficult start to the 2026/27 Championship season, and for the first time since taking charge of the Red Dragons, manager Phil Parkinson is under increased pressure.

Wrexham allowed a one-goal advantage to slip away late on Tuesday evening, when they were defeated at home by West Bromwich Albion.

Kieffer Moore gave the home side the lead just after the hour mark, but a late double from the Baggies, courtesy of Isaac Price and Aune Heggebo, gave the Black Country outfit all three points, and resigned Wrexham to just two wins in their opening ten league games.

Now, for one of the first times since taking charge at the Racecourse Ground in July 2021, Parkinson is facing backlash, and if the former Bradford City boss is unable to turn the tide sooner rather than later, the walls may well close in on him.

Parkinson has guided the club all the way from the National League to the brink of the Championship play-offs in rapid success, but even he isn't immune from criticism, as Football League World takes a look at six replacements the Welsh outfit must be considering if they part ways with the 58-year-old sooner rather than later.

Steve Cooper

Steve Cooper is an expert when it comes to the Championship.

In each of the three seasons he has managed in the division (two with Swansea City and one with Nottingham Forest), he has never finished outside of the top six, and on each of those occasions, progressively went one better, ultimately guiding Forest to the Premier League in 2022, where they have remained ever since.

Spells with Leicester City and Brondby followed, in which he was much less successful, having been dismissed from both, and he has been out of work since May after leaving the Danish side.

Wrexham need someone to guide them into the top eight, and with an exceptional track record of just that, a return to Wales for Cooper could be the best move for all parties.

Rob Edwards

From one Welshman to another, it had largely been expected that when Rob Edwards left Middlesbrough for Wolverhampton Wanderers in November 2025, he was seen as the future at Molineux, regardless of what division the Old Gold would find themselves in the following year.

However, he would be dismissed in surprise circumstances over the summer and replaced by Cesar Peixoto, and has been out of work ever since.

His best work came with Luton Town, guiding the Hatters from the Premier League to complete their journey from non-league to the top-flight, and with Wrexham, he could complete a similar trick.

Steven Gerrard

A big name in the world of football, but Wrexham have the pulling power to make this one happen, as Steven Gerrard could be an interesting candidate.

The Liverpool legend took his first steps into managing with Rangers in 2018, and guided the Glasgow-based outfit to an invincible season in 2021, before spells with Aston Villa and Al-Ettifaq followed.

The 46-year-old is looking to kickstart his managerial career back into life, but has remained patient for the correct move, and with Wrexham, the right opportunity could become available shortly.

Jon Dahl Tomasson

Danish boss Jon Dahl Tomasson spent over 18 months at Ewood Park with Blackburn Rovers between July 2022 and February 2024, and his time in Lancashire was a bit of a rollercoaster.

Tomasson took Blackburn to within goal difference of qualifying for the Championship play-offs during the 2022/23 campaign; the wheels would fall off shortly after, as the 50-year-old criticised and cited the reason for his departure as a lack of funding.

An unsuccessful spell with the Sweden men's national team followed, and Tomasson has been out of work ever since; though he likely won't be Wrexham's first option, he's certainly an interesting one, and one they must consider.

Scott Parker

Scott Parker is part of an esteemed list of managers to have successfully guided three different teams to the top flight, having done so with Fulham in the play-offs in 2020, Bournemouth in 2nd place in 2022, and Burnley in 2025, conceding just 16 league goals across the entire campaign with the Clarets on their way to achieving 100 points.

The former West Ham United and Tottenham Hotspur midfielder has yet to quite cut it in the Premier League, and whether he is up for another promotion battle in the Championship remains to be seen.

Though as far as available managers with a proven track record in the division go, Parker is among the best.

Who do you think Wrexham should appoint in the event of Parkinson's dismissal? Share your thoughts below!

Robbie Keane

A bit of a wildcard pick, but Robbie Keane's next job in management looks primed to be in the Championship, and after title-winning seasons in Israel with Maccabi Tel Aviv in 2023 and then in Hungary with Ferencvaros in 2025, the Irishman is hot property in the managerial world.

According to Alan Nixon's Patreon, Preston North End were weighing up a move for Keane before eventually settling on Graham Alexander, as he could come into the crosshairs of Wrexham.
