Ben Johnson has rubbed some people the wrong way since he became the head coach of the Chicago Bears. Thanks to some bold comments about himself and his team, several folks have seen him as arrogant.
But the results on the field are becoming harder to deny by the week. Now, after a clutch 30-24 victory over the New England Patriots that had his fingerprints all over the game, fans were left impressed and started singing his praises.
A matchup billed as a battle between Drake Maye and Caleb Williams saw both quarterbacks put together all-around incredible performances. However, in the end, a career-long 58-yard field goal from Cairo Santos with 1:34 remaining gave the Bears a nine-point cushion and helped seal a 30-24 victory.
That field goal ended up becoming a key area of praise for Johnson, who had a thoroughly excellent game plan from start to finish. After the Bears jumped out to a 20-7 lead in the first half, an all-time gaffe to give the Patriots a touchdown before the end of the period put them on the back foot.
However, Johnson responded with an excellent opening script in the third quarter to add another seven points on the board. Then, with under two minutes remaining in the contest and the game potentially on the line, he trusted Santos once again.
Despite him missing a 53-yard field goal earlier in the quarter and having a career high of 55 yards, Johnson placed his faith in Santos to take them home from 58 yards. He delivered, and it ended up being enough for the Bears to improve to 5-2.
“Ben Johnson already had the Bears locker room. But going for that field goal told the world he absolutely believes in his team, no matter what, and he will go up or down with them. Special message and special moment,”one fan wrote.
But he wasn’t the only one to send praise Johnson’s way. A lot of folks in the media, including the insiders, were left understandably impressed by the second-year head coach and how he was handling situations and the locker room.
“Ballsy by Ben Johnson. Wow,”Ari Meirov admitted, as Adam Schefter wrote, “A career-long 58-yard FG from Bears kicker Cairo Santos, and a gutsy decision from HC Ben Johnson,” alongside a clip of the historic field goal.
John Frascella, too, was in awe, writing, “Ben Johnson has balls of steel. Sends out Santos for a career-high attempt with the entire game on the line … and Santos drills it. Ben Johnson believes in his guys.”
One fan believed it was part of the experience with Johnson as he pointed to a variety of different instances where Johnson had gone against the norm, choosing to believe in his strategy over conventional wisdom.
“I still think about Ben Johnson going for it on 4th down from our own 30 in the 1st half of the playoff game against the Packers and not getting it,” the fan recalled.
“The guy’s a psychopath, and nobody knows what he’s going to do at any moment. He throws the ball more than anyone in the NFL on 2nd & short and runs it more than anyone on 2nd & long.”
For him, this was just a continuation of that experience, as he joked, “Ben to Cairo Santos: ‘Yo, go hit your career long with the game on the line and if you miss, Maye is at half field.’ Just never know what’s coming.”
But that was part of what made Johnson so special and what helped him transform a five-win Bears team into the winners of the vaunted NFC North in his first year with the franchise.
Now, he has them primed for a playoff position again, despite Williams missing three games this season. At 5-2, they are firmly in the picture, and fans are starting to take notice of just how good a coaching job Johnson has done so far this year.
“Really fun game. Drake Maye and Caleb Williams balled out,” one fan exclaimed. “Ben Johnson simply outcoached Vrabel and McDaniels. He is a true game-changer as a coach.”
It remains to be seen if the Bears can continue this momentum over the rest of the season, with their next game scheduled against the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Seattle Seahawks.
