Chelsea finally have their first Premier League clean sheet under Xabi Alonso after beating Everton 2-0 on Saturday, with Pedro Neto scoring twice to secure an impressive away victory.
The result offered encouragement for the Blues, who have been looking to find greater defensive consistency under their new manager.
However, one clean sheet will not resolve every concern at Stamford Bridge.
Alonso is keen to build a side capable of challenging for major honours, and strengthening his defensive options — especially in the injury absence of Reece James — could remain a priority as Chelsea assess potential targets ahead of the January transfer window.
According to CaughtOffside, Chelsea are among the clubs interested in signing Barcelona defender Jules Kounde, who could be considering his future after losing his regular starting place under Hansi Flick.
Liverpool have reportedly made contact with intermediaries regarding a possible deal, while Arsenal and Manchester United are also monitoring the French international. Bayern Munich are said to be keeping tabs on the situation as well.
Kounde — described as “professional” by Barca boss Hansi Flick — has established himself as a reliable performer at the highest level, having featured prominently for both Barcelona and the France national team. His ability to operate at right-back and centre-back makes him an attractive option for clubs seeking greater versatility at the back.
Chelsea are no strangers to the defender, having previously admired him during his time at Sevilla. A renewed pursuit could appeal to Alonso, particularly if he wants to add an experienced player who can provide competition across multiple defensive positions.
However, any potential deal would come at a significant cost. Barcelona are reportedly seeking around €60 million to consider selling Kounde, who remains under contract until 2030.
That lengthy agreement gives the Spanish club considerable negotiating power, meaning Chelsea would likely have to make a substantial financial commitment to prise him away from the Catalan giants.
The Blues have invested heavily in young talent in recent transfer windows, but Kounde would offer something different: experience at the highest level and the flexibility to cover more than one position.
Saturday’s victory at Everton was a positive step for Alonso, with Chelsea showing greater defensive discipline on their way to their first league clean sheet under the Spaniard.
Nevertheless, adding another proven defender could help the manager build greater consistency over the course of a demanding campaign.
