Rafa Camara will be the new driver on the grid for the 2027 Formula 1 season and his long-term aim will be to claim a Ferrari seat.

Haas have confirmed that Rafa Camara will join the team for 2027 as Esteban Ocon’s replacement, meaning they now have two junior Ferrari drivers on their books.

There is plenty of excitement about Camara’s potential, and many are looking forward to an interesting intra-team battle with Ollie Bearman next year.

Rafa Camara’s ‘spectacular’ trait coming to F1

Camara is currently leading the Formula 2 standings ahead of his move to Haas, and Juan Pablo Montoya has been particularly impressed by the Brazilian’s one-lap pace.

Speaking on AS Colombia, Montoya said: “Camara won the F3 Championship, he’s currently leading the F2 Championship. In my opinion, it’s been a little up and down, a little inconsistent.

“But he’s done a good job lately. He had a great weekend in Baku, where there were double races, and it helped him a lot to lead. But he has been very solid. Where he is very strong is in qualifying.

“In a qualifying lap he does a spectacular job and that always makes a difference.”

Rafa Camara tipped to fight for Lewis Hamilton’s seat

Hamilton is still performing well at Ferrari, but at 41 years old, the Italian team must start preparing for life beyond the British driver.

With junior drivers Ollie Bearman and Camara now both at Haas, Ferrari will be keeping a close eye on the young duo. Montoya believes Camara could challenge Bearman to become Hamilton’s heir.

“I thought Haas weren’t going to put two Ferrari drivers there, because it puts them in a good position because you benefit from Ferrari’s help, but you’re at Ferrari’s mercy and risk losing your drivers,” Montoya said.

“What I think will be interesting is if Camara starts beating Bearman, because the Europeans already see Bearman as the replacement for Hamilton.

“If Camara comes and beats him, suddenly Hamilton’s replacement becomes Camara.”
