New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has turned his season around in recent weeks, and despite his most recent effort ending in a loss to the Chicago Bears on Thursday, he earned praise from teammate Dre’Mont Jones for his talent and competitive mentality.
According to the Boston Herald’s Doug Kyed, Jones spoke highly of Maye and the quality of quarterback that he is following the loss.
“Probably the most talented quarterback I've played with in terms of letting things go and going out there and competing no matter what. He's a he's a hell of a player,” Jones said.
Maye’s recent performances from Weeks 4-7 have provided a stark contrast to his sluggish start to the year from Weeks 1-3. After struggling to find consistency early in the year, he has elevated his level of play over the course of the past four weeks, showcasing the accuracy, confidence and decision-making that turned him into one of the NFL’s best quarterbacks following last season.
He has recorded 1,199 passing yards with a 12-2 touchdown-to-interception ratio in that span, highlighting just how effective he’s been for New England.
The Patriots’ three-game winning streak was snapped by the Bears this week, but Maye’s resurgence, which has been fueled by him attacking defenses downfield, making sound reads in the pocket and using his legs to escape pressure and extend plays, has stood out. His versatility has made the offense more difficult to defend and helped New England come away with a more than salvageable 4-3 record moving forward after falling to 1-2 to begin the season.
Maye’s teammates also spoke highly of him last season, when he established himself as a franchise pillar and finished as the runner-up for the AP MVP award. Confidence in him remains evident as he continues to demonstrate his talent and leadership this year.
