Broadcasting duo Richard Keys and Andy Gray have sent a ripple through the Rangers fanbase after teasing an upcoming interview with one of the most polarising figures in the club’s modern history: former owner Charles Green.
Speaking at the close of their latest Keys & Gray Unleashed episode on YouTube on Tuesday (13 October), Keys announced that the self-proclaimed Yorkshire businessman will feature on the show this Thursday, 15 October.
The announcement immediately drew an unfiltered, telling reaction from former Rangers striker Gray, highlighting just how volatile Green’s legacy remains among those who lived through the club’s darkest financial era.
Green famously led the consortium that purchased the assets of Rangers out of liquidation for £5.5million in the summer of 2012, steering the club down into the fourth tier. While some supporters initially credited him with keeping the lights on at Ibrox during an existential crisis, his brief and chaotic tenure as chief executive ultimately left a deeply fractured legacy, marked by controversial retail deals with Mike Ashley’s Sports Direct and a messy corporate exit in April 2013.
Teasing the upcoming tell-all interview, Keys acknowledged the sheer baggage attached to Green‘s name, while defending the decision to bring him on air.
“On Thursday this week, we will be speaking to Charles Green, the former owner of Rangers Football Club“, Keys told viewers.
As Keys spoke, co-host Gray immediately interjected with a blunt “Oh, dear!“
Meanwhile, Keys went on to Green despite his negative image among the Rangers faithful: “Someone who left a trail of controversy. Not sure that he deserves to be the villain in the story, but we’ll find out more on Thursday. So, join us then.“
Green’s departure from Ibrox did not signal the end of his ties to Scottish headlines. In 2015, Green was arrested alongside several former associates as part of a high-profile police inquiry into the 2012 takeover, although all charges were ultimately dropped. Green later received a multi-million-pound settlement from the Crown Office in 2021 following a wrongful prosecution acknowledgement.
Despite his legal vindication, the long-term structural and financial fallout of his tenure – most notably the restrictive merchandising agreements that plagued Ibrox commercial operations for years – means his standing among supporters remains overwhelmingly negative.
For Rangers supporters, Green’s return to the media spotlight is bound to reopen old wounds. His handling of the club’s corporate governance, the genesis of the retail contracts that crippled commercial growth, and his tumultuous relationship with manager Ally McCoist remain sore points for the fanbase.
Whether Green will use the platform to rewrite his chapter in Glasgow or face tough questioning over his tumultuous era remains to be seen. One thing is certain: Rangers fans will be tuning in on Thursday to see what fresh revelations the former Ibrox chief has to air.
