In pictures: James McClean's 'The Walls' book signing at Waterstones in Derry a huge success

FORMER Ireland international James McClean was delighted with the support shown for the launch of his explosive new book ‘The Walls’ at Waterstones in Foyleside on Thursday night.

'It's a mess' - Bothroyd questions what...

Written with sports journalist Daniel McDonnell, James’ autobiography has already proven a huge hit and almost 100 people queued up for a chance to meet the Creggan man during his book signing in Derry.

James was joined by his wife Erin, his four young children and other close family members at the event as fans made the most of an opportunity to get up close and personal with the former Sunderland, Stoke City, Wigan, West Brom and Wrexham star.

Following a week of controversy where McClean was heavily criticised for comments made about mental health in a newspaper interview promoting his book, the meet-and-greet will have provided a timely boost for the Derry City winger who has been embroiled in a contract dispute with the Brandywell club.

The 103-capped international used the opportunity to clear the air and explain his comments were taken out of context.

“Any man that goes to therapy, any man that seeks help, I couldn’t commend them any more for doing that. But I was talking about me and my own situation. And probably using that word ‘weakness’ or having that view that it’s a weakness for me, maybe that’s my weakness."

James’ book is a warts-and-all exploration of his weaknesses and obsessions, provides an insight into his childhood and charts his unexpected and sudden rise to stardom as a Premiership footballer through to his return to Brandywell Stadium.

“There were a lot of people which is nice, especially for a book signing - it's always better than no one showing up isn't it?," he smiled. “Maybe it shows you that maybe some people still like you which is always good.

“It was great support and it's greatly appreciated. For the people that showed up I want to say a big ‘thank you’ and to have my own book out now in my own city is a wee bit surreal.”
