9 takeaways from 49ers' worst performance of 2026

The San Francisco 49ers on Sunday lost to the Atlanta Falcons 29-20 in what amounted to easily their worst performance of the year.

Here's a rundown of our takeaways from the first loss of 2026 for the 6-1 49ers:

Fell into the trap

Sunday's game was widely labeled a trap game. The 49ers fell into it. After staking a 14-3 lead they crumbled on the road and allowed 23 consecutive points before finally getting back in the end zone. They were sloppy with giveaways and penalties, and defensively they didn't make life hard on Atlanta until deep into the fourth quarter. San Francisco is off next week, and it looked like a large swath of the team got a head start on that time away.

End-of-half calamity

The game swung at the end of the first half. Jordan James fumbled, but the 49ers recovered and had a second-and-1 at the Atlanta 28 with a 14-9 lead and the clock winding inside of four minutes to go in the half. They were in prime position to essentially bleed the rest of the clock and take at least a one-score lead into halftime. Instead Kaelon Black fumbled on the next play, Atlanta recovered and drove down for a field goal to end the half. That made it 14-12, Atlanta took the ball to start the third quarter and they scored again to go up 19-14. They never looked back.

Brock Purdy was not good enough

Purdy never looked comfortable Sunday against the Falcons. He was not accurate, his decision-making looked half a beat slow and his ability to work out of muddy pockets just wasn't there. He didn't have a terrible game, but 27-of-40 for 288 yards, one touchdown and two interceptions isn't going to win him any awards. The worst part of his afternoon was his second INT. San Francisco was at its own 48 facing a third-and-9. They had two downs to get the first to keep the clock moving with less than three minutes to go, trailing 26-20. Purdy fired a throw directly to Falcons linebacker Kendal Daniels for what became essentially a game-sealing interception. That's the kind of moment where a touchdown bolsters his MVP case. Instead he threw his worst interception of the season to seal the defeat. Yuck.

49ers have a special teams problem

Not only did Atlanta have two big kick returns of 61 and 38 yards, but Eddy Pineiro missed another extra point. His fourth such miss of the year. Don't be surprised if the 49ers look at new kickers over the bye week. Not having a kicker who can reliably make the PAT is a huge problem San Francisco cannot continue ignoring.

Kaelon Black's first touchdown

Outside of the fumble Black had a nice day. He ran it 12 times for 63 yards and a touchdown. He's still not consistent enough and the game script Sunday probably didn't help him, but he flashed some burst and started to find some creases. From the end of the first quarter and into the first play of the second quarter he had three consecutive carries for 52 yards and a touchdown.

Another injury to monitor

Part of the reason Black was so active is because Christian McCaffrey was dealing with a quad injury. He spent a ton of time in the medical tent and while he eventually returned, it's not good news that he has some kind of ailment entering the Bye. This will be a situation we're watching closely when the 49ers get back from their week off.

Secondary struggles without Upton Stout

Stout was officially active for Sunday's game, but he never took the field because of a shoulder injury. In his stead was cornerback Jack Jones who struggled badly and was eventually taken out for rookie CB Ephesians Prysock. This is the second week in a row the 49ers haven't had any good answers without Stout on the field.

Penalty problem

One of the symptoms of a sleepy effort from San Francisco was a rash of bad penalties on both sides of the ball. They were hit with seven accepted penalties for 55 yards. Four of those penalties gave the Falcons first downs, one of which bailed Atlanta out of a second-and-20. Another got them a fresh set of downs after a third down stop. It was not a disciplined effort from San Francisco.

Turnover tale

The 49ers gave the ball away four times with two fumbles and two interceptions. That's a good way to lose a game. San Francisco is now 1-11 under Kyle Shanahan when they commit four-plus turnovers. To make matters worse, three of the turnovers were inside Atlanta's 30. Black's fumble came on a snap from the Atlanta 28. Purdy's first interception came on a snap from the Atlanta 28, and then George Kittle's fumble on the 49ers' final possession happened at the Atlanta 19. If those first two giveaways turn into field goals for the 49ers instead of 10 points for the Falcons, the game looks a lot different.
