Ipswich Town 1-1 Nottingham Forest - Terry Hunt on Blues

The Forest match on Friday night was probably the best example so far. Let’s be honest, they absolutely battered us in the second half. It was a very, very long 45 minutes!

But, somehow we didn’t concede during that pummelling, and, when the 90 minutes were up, we were still level.

You could see the visitors getting nervous, not knowing whether to stick or twist. Should they shut up shop or keep going for the win?

Then, lo and behold, we very nearly snatched our traditional late, late winner. Jack Clarke’s shot just curled the wrong side of the post.

It was our only shot - on or off target - after Julio Enciso’s equaliser in the 41st minute. Yes, it would have been “floodlight robbery,” as a friend of mine described it. But who cares!

We know there will be plenty of matches when we’re under the cosh, so staying in the game with a chance of grabbing precious points will be absolutely vital.

This group of players have more about them than their counterparts from two years ago. They are willing to dig in, and never accept that they’re beaten. Very important assets for a newly promoted team.

Of course, like most backs-to-the-wall performances, the result against Forest owed a lot to luck.

Quite how the visitors managed to miss a whole host of very presentable chances, I will never know. They’re a decent team who will finish mid-table.

But we also defended stubbornly and, in the cases of Leif Davis and Christian Walton, heroically.

Walton produced some really good saves and Davis cleverly cleared off the line twice, once with the vital assistance of his keeper’s big toe! Who says Leif can’t defend?

It was great to see Julio Enciso scoring his first goal of the season. The effervescent Paraguayan is deservedly a big fans’ favourite. He was back to his exciting best against Forest and took the goal brilliantly.

His skill, bubbly personality and non-stop effort will be powerful weapons.

Once again, our Argentinian World Cup winner Exequiel Palacios was outstanding in midfield. What a player we have there, as to be expected from someone with the Jules Rimet trophy on his CV.

We again missed Sasa Lukic in the middle of the pitch. He and Palacios are such a terrific partnership.

At the moment, his replacement Florentino Luis is not at the same level, I’m afraid. We ended up being overrun and outfought by Forest in midfield, and losing the ball in dangerous areas.

I really hope Lukic is back against Hull next Saturday. If not, I would prefer to see the fit-again Azor Matisuwa lining up alongside Palacios.

Our other ongoing issue is left-wing, to use old-fashioned footballing parlance. Jaden Philogene looks off the pace.

I know he is still coming back from injury, but at the moment he is a weak link.

I understand the argument about introducing Jack Clarke when the game opens up and defenders are tiring - it almost worked again on Friday night - but shouldn’t we try the other way round?

By that, I mean start with Clarke and replace him with Philogene after an hour or so?

I’m sure Jack will be more threatening and giving Jaden the opportunity to play when the game is more open would hopefully give him some confidence.

Over to you, Gary O’Neil...

So, here we are, nicely tucked into mid-table after eight games. It’s a solid enough start. Probably better than most of us anticipated, if we’re being honest?

Next Saturday’s game at Hull is absolutely massive for a number of reasons.

First and foremost, as a fellow newly promoted club, they are one of the teams we really need to win points from.

Secondly, our opponents after Hull are Bournemouth. I’m not sure how many of you watched their game against AC Milan (including Omari Hutchinson) on TV?

Well, the Cherries were mightily impressive on their way to a 3-0 thumping of the Italian giants.

We will have to be at our absolute best to get anything from them, which makes our game at Hull even more important.

My ambition is for us to arrive at the latest irritating international break still cosily tucked into the comfort of mid-table.

That probably needs a win at Hull. It’s tough in the top league!
