Keighley battle through gale-force winds to claim victory

The win positions them 8th of 12 in Counties 1 Yorkshire.

The heavy rain and gusting gale force winds made it a challenge for both teams to gain field position with touch kicks.

Bridlington's formidable pack placed the home eight under significant pressure throughout the match, particularly in the scrums.

Keighley were weakened by the absence of heavyweight Andrew Heys, sidelined due to a concussion.

Several changes were made to the Keighley line-up, with Charlie Hartley stepping in for the unavailable Pickles at scrum half, and Meegan replacing the unavailable Brown at flyhalf.

All the points were scored in a 15-minute burst at the end of the first half.

After 30 minutes of play, neither team had a clear chance, but Keighley took the lead when Meegan capitalised on Bridlington's centre illegally entering the ruck, scoring a well-taken 45-metre penalty.

The match was punctuated by injuries to players from both sides, with Bridlington's left winger having to leave the field after only seven minutes.

Ebbrell took over at scrum half for a period, during which the pack drove downfield to the Bridlington line, allowing Ed Keighley to power over for a try, which Meegan converted after 33 minutes.

The visitors responded immediately, scoring through their centre, but the conversion went wide.

This spurred Keighley back into the attack, and with the last play of the first half, Meegan fed Gibson, who forced his way over halfway between the left-hand post and corner flag.

Meegan converted to make the half-time score 17-5 to Keighley.

The second half was largely a midfield battle, with defences on top.

Bridlington's discipline deteriorated, resulting in two 10-metre withdrawals for back-chatting and a yellow card for their centre for repeat offences.

There was only one scoring chance for both teams, which fell to Meegan with a long-distance penalty, but it drifted well wide against the strong wind.

Next Saturday, the first XV travels to bottom-of-the-table Doncaster Phoenix, hoping for a third win and a climb up the table.

There is good news from Utley, as player numbers are increasing, and last Saturday they were able to field three senior teams.

The Stags remain unbeaten with a 43-0 victory away at Modernians and lead their league, Counties 4B Yorkshire.

The development side turned out for their first game of the season and won 33-12 at Bradford & Bingley II.
