The Minnesota Twins made a deal with the Toronto Blue Jays on Aug. 3, sending prospects Dasan Hill, Dameury Pena and John Klein north of the border for a veteran reliever under contract through 2027.
Jeff Hoffman pitched well in a Twins uniform, posting a 2.50 ERA and a 2.43 FIP in 20 appearances. He also struck out 27 batters over 18 innings (13.5 K/9). Hoffman’s last appearance came Sept. 22.
Shortly after, the Minnesota Twins placed him on the 15-day injured list with right forearm inflammation. On Tuesday, we finally got an update on Minnesota’s new right-handed reliever, who is entering the final year of the three-year, $33 million contract he signed with Toronto in January 2025.
Hoffman underwent right arthroscopic elbow surgery performed by Dr. Jeffrey Dugas, Dan Hayes (The Athletic) reported Tuesday. The procedure included the removal of a bone chip and a debridement.
The Twins say Hoffman will begin a throwing program in eight weeks, which puts him on track to start throwing in late December. The club anticipates he will be ready for the start of the 2027 season.
Hoffman is owed $12.67 million in 2027, with the Blue Jays covering $3.75 million of it as part of the trade, per Baseball Reference. He is set to become a free agent after next season.
The 33-year-old was an All-Star with the Philadelphia Phillies in 2024, when he posted a 2.17 ERA with 89 strikeouts in 66.1 innings. Between Toronto and Minnesota this season, he went 6-8 with a 3.55 ERA, six saves and 102 strikeouts in 66 innings.
This is Hoffman’s second stint with the Twins. Minnesota signed him as a free agent in February 2023 and released him March 28 before Opening Day. He signed with Philadelphia three days later.
