The Blue Devils, who returned to competitive men’s basketball this season following a two-year absence, made it two wins from two in the MABL top flight with another determined display.
Bury were pushed throughout by a young and talented Liverpool side in a scrappy and physical encounter, but produced the important defensive stops when they were needed to secure the victory.
Chris Ogden was at the heart of the defensive effort for the hosts, setting the tone with his intensity and determination as Bury attempted to disrupt Liverpool’s rhythm.
Che Dann also provided valuable energy, combining an aggressive approach with an important scoring contribution to help the Blue Devils maintain their momentum.
Point guard Dan McWilliams produced another impressive display after starring in Bury’s opening regular-season victory.
McWilliams showed composure and court awareness to help control proceedings while also providing a threat from beyond the arc.
Liverpool, however, ensured Bury were made to work hard for the points and forced the hosts to stay disciplined in a closely contested encounter.
With the outcome still in the balance, Bury’s defence came to the fore as timely stops and disciplined possessions allowed the Blue Devils to gain the upper hand and eventually secure an eight-point victory.
Head coach Stu Jackson was pleased with the way his side responded.
“Despite this being a scrappy game against a young but talented Liverpool squad, we were able to dig in when it mattered most, finding defensive stops at key moments,” he said.
Although Bury were unable to produce their most polished performance, the victory demonstrated their ability to grind out results when things are not going entirely their way.
Ogden’s defensive work, Dann’s energy and McWilliams’ performance at point guard all proved important as Jackson’s men found a way to get over the line.
The Blue Devils now take their unbeaten record on the road when they travel to face Free City YMCA next Tuesday, looking to make it three victories from three.
