Tottenham Hotspur finally ended their six-game winless run with a 3-1 victory over Coventry City on Monday evening. James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies were on the scoresheet, as the Lilywhites moved out of the drop zone.
While Spurs claimed the win, there was some disappointment over their failure to keep a clean sheet. Antonin Kinsky allowed Jack Rudoni’s goal to go in far too easily, while Dominic Solanke toiled up top but with little cutting edge.
James Maddison was excellent, dictating play from the centre of the pitch and making some delightful passes in the final third. He announced his first start in 18 months with a banger in the top corner that gave goalkeeper Carl Rushworth no chance to save. Also, it was a delight to see Dejan Kulusevski finally get some minutes on the pitch after his injury hell. There is obviously a long way to go before the Swede is back to full match fitness, though.
Another positive on the night was Omar Marmoush’s performance. Starting as an inside left forward, the Egyptian was lively throughout his 86 minutes on the pitch. He destabilised the Coventry defence with his pace, direct running and clever movement.
Marmoush finally broke his Tottenham duck, curling in a superb strike from the edge of the box to beat Rushworth. After the full-time whistle, Marmoush said everyone in the dressing room are happy with the performance and result. He believes that the win over Coventry is just the beginning of a good run for the North Londoners.
“We are so, so happy. We have had good performances in that last week but haven’t got the end result of a win. Very happy to win our first game today, also happy to score my first goal for Tottenham. We will build on this,” Marmoush said in an interview with BBC Sport.
“I am very happy it paid off, but I am happier for the three points we got today.
“I mean, every game we learn. As you said, we’ve played amazing in the first few weeks, but the result wasn’t there. It is just the beginning.”
"Happier (than his goal) with the three points"

After Solanke got off the mark in the 1-1 draw with Manchester United, Marmoush followed suit with his first goal of the season against Coventry. It was a fantastic goal, restoring the hosts’ lead in the 58th minute after Rudoni’s equaliser.
In the lead-up to the goal, though, the Egyptian star appeared to catch defender Van Ewijk with a high hand as he attempted to hold him off. He left the Coventry man in the heap before lashing a powerful drive that Carl Rushworth couldn’t keep out. VAR checked the incident and cleared it, thankfully, allowing the 27-year-old’s goal to stand.
After signing on a season-long loan from Manchester City with a buy obligation, it took Marmoush six games to break his duck. Tottenham fans will hope it is the first of many for the versatile forward.
