The Carolina Panthers have ruthlessly fired both defensive coordinator Ejiro Evero and defensive passing game coordinator Jonathan Cooley in the wake of Thursday's 19-27 defeat to the Green Bay Packers.
The Panthers, now 3-4 for the year, made it back-to-back losses with yesterday's result as they surrendered 20 points in the opening half at Lambeau Field, just four days after falling to a humiliating 43-13 defeat to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.
Over their past two games, the NFC South franchise has conceded 70 points, and those upstairs have decided that now is the time to make a change if they wish to drastically improve the team's defense, which now ranks 10th-worst in the league.
With that, the Panthers' hierarchy has moved to fire Evero as their DC, ending his three-year stint in the role, and has also axed Cooley as the defensive passing game coordinator.
It's been suggested that Evero's seat has been hot ever since Carolina gave up 59 points to the Chicago Bears in Week 1, though that undoubtedly reached boiling point with last weekend's 43-13 loss to the Buccaneers, while Thursday's loss to the Packers appeared to be the final straw.
In a statement released by the Panthers on Friday, it was revealed that defensive line coach Todd Wash has been named interim defensive coordinator and will call the defensive plays in Evero's absence, though for just how long remains to be seen.
Carolina has also confirmed that outside linebackers coach/run game specialist AC Carter's responsibilities will expand to include coaching the defensive line, while secondary coach Renaldo Hill will continue to oversee the defensive backs.
Against the Packers on Thursday, the Panthers defense certainly didn't put in their worst performance of the season, but they ultimately struggled, finishing the entire game with 0 sacks and zero quarterback hits and surrendering 354 total yards.
The Panthers' defense has, however, struggled with injuries. Jaelan Phillips' pass-rushing wasn't available on Thursday night, and starting cornerbacks Mike Jackson and Jaycee Horn have been on IR. During the game, rookie CB Will Lee III left the field with an injury.
Evidently, Carolina has decided that a change was needed and has chosen to make it happen sooner rather than later, with Evero and Cooley paying the price.
During the game, Panthers fans were left fuming with quarterback Bryce Young after he smiled on the sidelines after throwing an interception on Thursday Night Football.
The quarterback had a pass batted down at the line of scrimmage, which was picked off, before Packers quarterback Jordan Love found Matthew Golden for a touchdown to extend their lead.
Young had early struggles in the game against the Packers, with his interception only compounding Panthers fans' anger, but he smiled on the sidelines after the ill-timed turnover, leaving many furious with their quarterback.
