Nets' Mikel Brown Jr. accepts responsibility for late-game mistakes

After a couple of costly late-game mistakes against the Boston Celtics on Tuesday, Brooklyn Nets rookie Mikel Brown Jr. took responsibility and vowed to bounce back.

With the Nets up by one in overtime, a cutting Brown missed a layup, giving the Celtics the ball with 2.3 seconds left. From there, Jayson Tatum was freed up on a busted coverage involving Brown and hit the game-winning shot to send the Celtics to the 125-124 win.

The two miscues overshadowed his turnaround 3-pointer that beat the buzzer in regulation and sent the game to overtime. The end-game blunders gave Brown and the Nets a tremendous learning opportunity, and he plans to take advantage of it.

"I blame me," Brown said, via the YES Network. "We weren't supposed to switch that, and then I switched it. I made a couple of mistakes down the stretch that kind of hurt us. I'm going to take the blame on it, learn from it, get prepared and next game, don't make the same mistake again. I'm definitely not going to forget this at all."

Brown scored 16 of his 17 total points in the fourth quarter and overtime, while adding five rebounds and five assists off the bench. After beginning the season on a minute restriction due to an ankle injury, Brown logged a season-high 27 minutes, 43 seconds.

The sixth overall pick delivered his best performance of the season so far as he ramps up his workload after being limited in the preseason. He knocked down timely 3s and appeared comfortable taking them in high-pressure situations.

Brown showed why the Nets were so high on his potential in the draft with a solid performance. While there were certainly some mistakes made, Nets coach Jordi Fernández was pleased with how the 20-year-old performed on Tuesday.

"You just (saw) him be more comfortable in the way he was moving and dribbling the ball and getting to his spots and his comfortable shots that he can definitely make," Fernández said. "He touches the paint. He can explode to get to the rim and there. Obviously, correctable things for him, but I think overall for him, (it was) more positive. His impact was good."
