Plans to make big changes to men’s tennis in 2028 were revealed by ATP Tour chairman Andrea Gaudenzi on Thursday.

Gaudenzi, a former Italian player who became chairman of the tour in 2020, took to social media to share ATP’s vision for the future in an open letter. He announced changes to four areas: player compensation, rankings and points distribution, calendar and scheduling, as well as competition formats and doubles.

The demanding schedule has been one of the main points of concern for players, with world number three Carlos Alcaraz recently insisting he will have to play fewer tournaments in the future to protect his body. The Spaniard was one of many top stars to have missed time out with injury in 2026, along with Jannik Sinner, Jack Draper, Arthur Fils and Holger Rune.

Andrea Gaudenzi’s plans to change the ATP Tour in 2028

The letter from Gaudenzi, posted on the ATP Tour website, outlined the following changes.

Player compensation: Significantly expanding and securing ATP’s central investment in players.

Rankings and points distribution: Evolving rankings system so that results at biggest events carry greater weight across the season, while reducing the incentive for players to overplay after a disappointing result.

Calendar and scheduling: Optimising the tour calendar by creating a clearer season structure and dedicated tournament category weeks that help players plan their seasons and adjust schedules as the season unfolds, while players remain free to compete across the full breadth of the tour. The previously announced addition of a 10th ATP Masters 1000 event in Saudi Arabia forms part of this broader effort to strengthen the tour’s top tier.

A new ATP Masters 1000 tournament in Saudi Arabia will be added to the tennis calendar from 2028 onwards. The event will most likely take place in February during the Middle East swing.
