‘Nice Interaction,’ ‘A National Treasure’ — NFL Fans Defend Al Michaels for ‘Lighthearted Banter’ After Calling Kirk Herbstreit a ‘Clown’

The dean of prime-time NFL play-by-play announcers, Al Michaels, had a lighthearted moment during Thursday Night Football coverage on Amazon Prime Video. A playful exchange unfolded between him and his co-announcer, Kirk Herbstreit, as Michaels pushed back against the idea of modern football analytics, calling Herbstreit a “clown.” The exchange quickly went viral, with fans debating Michaels’ take on the play.

In the Week 8 TNF matchup, the Carolina Panthers took on the Green Bay Packers. Quarterback Bryce Young and his team lost 27-19, handing the Packers their fifth win of the season.

Green Bay controlled much of the middle portion of the game and built a 27-10 lead, but Carolina made things interesting in the fourth quarter by cutting the deficit to eight. That’s when Michaels made his remark, prompting fans to come out in his defense.

The exchange came during a fourth-quarter play with less than three minutes remaining. The Packers had possession and faced a crucial fourth-down decision – attempt a 59-yard field goal or go for a risky fourth-down conversion.

In the booth, Herbstreit favored the cautious approach but playfully blamed the pressure to take such risks on the “world of analytics.”

Herbstreit joked, saying, “I’m with you. I don’t think, personally, it’s worth the risk. But with the world that you’ve created with analytics…”

Michaels immediately fired back at the jibe, “That I’ve created? Get out of town, clown.” The veteran sportscaster has long been known for his skepticism toward modern football analytics and his resistance to its growing influence.

Fans who caught the exchange flooded the comment section with reactions.

“Al was spicy tonight. Love to see it,” wrote Kyle Stackpole, a Senior NFL Editor at The Athletic on X, reacting to the clip.

“Al Michaels is too old but he is a national treasure and broadcasting legend forever and always,” said another fan, praising the veteran announcer.

Meanwhile, another user praised Michaels for such playful on-air moments, especially on a day when fans were mourning the loss of Hollywood legend Patrick Stewart.

“On a day where we lose someone as iconic as Patrick Stewart, we still have professionals, and effortless charmers like Al Michaels still around, fortunately for all of us,” the user wrote on X.

“You dislike friendly banter? You must not have any real friends. What a loser post,” another user wrote, calling out Awful Announcing’s post.

“Actually thought it was a nice interaction. They did a good job tonight,” another user wrote in response.

One user on X had a lengthy response to defend Michaels: “Al Michaels has struggled to effectively capture the electricity of massive plays, game swinging moments, etc. on TNF. That said, I didn’t think this was a bad moment at all. They’re referencing an ongoing inside joke this season, where they’ve commented how silly the “go for it” analytics seem in some situations. (And tbh I agree with that sentiment lol).”

Another fan took issue with Awful Announcing’s post, writing, “Am I missing something? This is just some lighthearted banter.”

Michaels has been in the broadcasting industry for more than five decades, but his work alongside Herbstreit on “Thursday Night Football” has increasingly drawn criticism from viewers.

The duo has regularly faced complaints about missed details, delayed reactions, and a perceived lack of energy during games, with Michaels in particular becoming a frequent target on social media. Thursday night’smissed fumble only added to the scrutiny surrounding a broadcast team that has struggled to win over some NFL fans.
