Liverpool icon Jurgen Klopp may have played an unsuspecting role in prompting a potential change in manager at Manchester United this season.
It follows a difficult start to the season for the Red Devils, who have picked up just one Premier League win, one victory in three Champions League encounters, and an exit from the EFL Cup. That has been far from ideal for Michael Carrick, who helped guide the team to third last season after taking charge of the group on an interim basis until the end of the campaign.
The former midfielder picked up a squad that was coming to the end of its time with Ruben Amorim, which was rocky at the best of times, with a change in system helping to get the best out of his players in their natural positions.
With a return to the Champions League sealed, along with a general lack of drama on a weekly basis, Carrick presented a safe pair of hands for a team that is crying out for some stability and direction.
However, the start of the season has reared up the same old problems once again, with the manager's job seemingly brought into question, which could prompt the United hierarchy to look into the managerial market once again for a different option.
Work may already be underway, with The Telegraph reporting that Julian Nagelsmann is expected to be a leading candidate for the head coach role at Old Trafford, if the club decides that it is time for a different direction in the coming weeks of the season.
It's a position that the 39-year-old would seemingly take if an offer were made to him, which could prompt a high-profile switch in the dugout for the former Germany and Bayern Munich coach.
Nagelsmann's availability may not have arisen if it were not for Klopp's own presence in recent months, after he decided to resign as the German national team head coach in the summer, with the DFB making the former Liverpool coach the number-one target to replace him.
There were scrapes between both Nagelsmann and Klopp during the World Cup, with the latter being a pundit for German outlet Magenta TV.
With the national team then crashing out of the tournament to Paraguay, the head coach resigned and the DFB made it very clear that Klopp was going to be his replacement.
Whether such an outcome would have followed if the ex-Liverpool man was not available is unclear, but it's such a move that may well have prompted Man United to the club's next managerial hire.
With a clash between the Reds and the Red Devils set for after the next international break, it remains to be seen whether a change will be made.
