Liverpool have endured a challenging start to the season, with questions emerging over the balance and depth of their squad as they look to compete on multiple fronts.
While Andoni Iraola has plenty of quality at his disposal, the departure of several midfield options has left the Reds short of depth in the centre of the park.
With reinforcements potentially needed in January, Liverpool could now be ready to step up their pursuit of a highly-rated Premier League midfielder.
The Reds are reportedly gaining ground on Chelsea in the race for his signature, with a reunion with his former manager potentially giving them a significant advantage.
According to the Daily Mail, Liverpool have moved ahead of Chelsea in the race to sign Bournemouth midfielder Alex Scott, with the England international emerging as a potential target for the January transfer window.
The 23-year-old has attracted considerable interest after establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s most promising midfielders. Chelsea made multiple attempts to sign him during the summer, including a bid reportedly worth £64 million, but Bournemouth refused to sanction his departure.
However, the Cherries are now understood to be more open to a sale, provided their valuation is met. Bournemouth are reportedly seeking around £100 million for Scott, meaning any deal would require a substantial financial commitment from his suitors.
Liverpool’s growing interest could be particularly significant because of Scott’s previous relationship with Iraola. The midfielder worked under the Spaniard at Bournemouth, where he developed into an important member of the side. Their existing connection could give the Reds an advantage as they attempt to convince him to move to Anfield.
Liverpool’s need for midfield reinforcements also strengthens the case for a potential move. Curtis Jones departed for Inter Milan without being replaced, leaving Iraola with fewer options in the middle of the pitch. Scott’s energy, technical ability and capacity to carry the ball forward could provide valuable depth and give Liverpool another option in possession.
The uncertainty surrounding Scott’s contract situation has added another dimension to the transfer speculation. Bournemouth have reportedly been unable to convince the midfielder to commit to fresh terms, with his current deal running until 2028. That could increase the pressure on the club to consider offers, although their £100 million valuation remains a major obstacle.
Chelsea are still expected to compete for his signature after previously attempting to secure a deal. However, Liverpool’s reported position at the front of the queue suggests the Merseyside club could have the upper hand, particularly if Scott is keen to work with Iraola again.
A January move is far from guaranteed, with Liverpool needing to weigh up the cost of the deal against other squad priorities. Nevertheless, Scott’s profile fits the club’s need for greater midfield depth, and the Reds appear to be positioning themselves for a potential transfer battle.
