MSU injury report: QB Alessio Milivojevic listed questionable vs. UCLA

EAST LANSING — If Michigan State doesn't get positive injury news later this week, it could be starting a freshman quarterback against a top-10 team.

Quarterback Alessio Milivojevic is listed questionable on Michigan State's preliminary injury report released Oct. 21 for its Saturday, Oct. 24 game against No. 9 UCLA at the Rose Bowl. Updates to the injury report will be posted Thursday and Friday at 8 p.m., as well as two hours before the 3:30 p.m. ET kickoff. CBS will broadcast the game. UCLA is a 14 1/2-point favorite.

Milivojevic has thrown for 1,263 yards and seven touchdowns this season on 121-for-185 accuracy. He has also thrown three interceptions. He threw two touchdowns last week in a 24-21 loss to Northwestern, one of the better pass protection games his offensive line has played allowing one sack (a strip sack for a turnover, at that). Milivojevic appeared to be fine after the game and spoke with media on the Spartan Stadium podium.

With backup Cam Fancher still listed out, that would put the ball in the hands of true freshman Kayd Coffman if Milivojevic can't play. The East Kentwood product Coffman played 11 snaps in relief during a 31-3 road loss to Wisconsin and picked up a pair of scrambling gains before being sacked. He has not thrown a collegiate pass.

More bad injury news: Running back Jaziun Patterson is also listed questionable after emerging as a stalwart in the place of injured starter Cam Edwards (knee, season). Patterson is up to 327 yards on 76 carries with five touchdowns, three of which came against Illinois while he added a receiving touchdown to boot. The downhill runner played the duration of MSU's loss last week, including the failed two-minute drive deep in Northwestern territory that ended in a blocked field goal.

Michigan State could be out linebackers Brady Pretzlaff and Caleb Wheatland, who are designated questionable. Left tackle Ben Murawski and running back Darrin Jones Jr. are also questionable. All four missed last week's Northwestern game.

The Spartans know that at least 11 players will miss the game against UCLA. Listed out are cornerbacks Tyran Chappell, Tre Bell, Charles Brantley and Keshawn Williams, who are the top four corners on the depth chart. Last week, Michigan State played fifth-year senior NiJhay Burt fresh off injury clearance alongside true freshman Jeremiah Favorite.

Linebacker Jordan Hall remains out for Michigan State for the second consecutive week after an injury against Illinois (his third separate injury of the season) put him in a sling. Also designated out are wide receiver Charles Taplin, fullback Jay Coyne, offensive lineman Tristan Comer and tight end Joe Caudill.

For UCLA, quarterback Nico Iamaleava remains out with his season-ending knee injury. So are defensive backs Rodrick Pleasant and Tao Johnson, wide receiver Mikey Matthews and Jonah Smith plus offensive linemen Sam Yoon and Jordan Davis. Offensive lineman Eugene Brooks is listed questionable.
