PGA Tour star tells reporter to 'stop it' immediately after dramatic victory
Austin Smotherman celebrates his second PGA Tour victory by raising two fingers on each hand

Austin Smotherman could not contain his delight after capping a life-changing four weeks with a dramatic playoff victory over Seamus Power at the Butterfield Bermuda Championship.

The 32-year-old ended a long wait to claim his first PGA Tour title four weeks ago by winning the Bank of Utah Championship in his 100th start, but he wasted no time becoming a two-time winner, taking down Power in a Monday finish at Port Royal.

The tournament was reduced to just three rounds after Sunday's play was canceled due to high winds, meaning California-born Smotherman and Ireland's Power faced off in a sudden-death playoff on Monday morning to decide the winner.

It was the American who triumphed. They both parred the par-three 16th twice before Smotherman clinched the victory at the third attempt, sinking a knee-knocker for his three in blustery conditions after Power was only able to make a bogey.

Not only did Smotherman become a two-time PGA Tour winner and achieve the rare feat of winning in back-to-back starts, but he also secured his PGA Tour card through 2029, guaranteeing his place on the lucrative Championship Series for two seasons when it launches in 2028.

He could not conceal his pride when Golf Channel's Gabby Herzig reminded him of his achievements. "Stop it, stop it," an overjoyed Smotherman said. "That's so cool. I'm still shaking; that putt was not easy."

Smotherman faced a 24-hour delay to get back on the course after posting 16 under through 54 holes, but he remained locked in and got the job done.

"We're out here playing an incredible sport in a beautiful spot. Whatever things are going to be thrown at us, Zak [Williamson, caddie] and I were going to be on top of our game," he said.

"Yesterday I felt like we handled everything pretty well. The tour's been great at communicating what's going to happen today for us. Once we got that news, it was nice to know what's going on. To come out on top is a cherry on top of that, so pretty awesome."

Smotherman appeared to be on a journeyman career arc where the taste of victory might elude him, but he has risen to a career-high 54th in the world rankings and earned a seat at the PGA Tour's top table in the blink of an eye.

"We knew we were doing a lot of good stuff and just wanted to go play golf," he added. "We were excited for the fall season.

"We had our best FedExCup finish ever and the fall we felt was just going to be bonus golf and do things like this.

"To have it come true and live this out now, not once but twice in that short time frame is, I mean, I couldn't have drawn it up. It's a fairytale right now."
