England wicketkeeper-batter Aneurin Donald has put pen to paper with Perth Scorchers ahead of the 2026-27 Big Bash League season, giving the defending champions a dynamic top-order option as they reshape their squad for the upcoming season.

Donald, who made his T20 international debut last month, has committed to a one-year deal that covers full availability, including the finals. The 29-year-old becomes the latest overseas recruit to join the Scorchers' roster alongside fellow England international Zak Crawley.

Perth's move to bring in both Donald and Crawley follows Kiwi batter Finn Allen being poached by Melbourne Stars last month on a mammoth three-year deal, understood to be worth more than half-a-million dollars in its opening season. Allen had scored a tournament-leading 466 runs to help the Scorchers claim their historic sixth men's Big Bash title in January, but the right-hander chose not to return to Western Australia after the club could not match the Stars' lucrative offer.

Three-time BBL champion Josh Inglis also did not re-sign with the Scorchers during the nine-day player movement window that followed that title win in January. Since a contracting embargo was lifted in August, the 83-game Scorchers veteran is yet to commit to the club, while Donald has already signed his maiden BBL contract.

Why did Perth Scorchers sign Aneurin Donald?

The Scorchers moved quickly to address the void left by both Allen's departure and Inglis's continued absence from the contracted list. Donald's arrival gives the club a wicketkeeper-batter capable of batting aggressively at the top of the order, and his one-year deal with full finals availability makes him a like-for-like fit for the role Inglis previously filled.

Welsh-born Donald, a Swansea native, made his first-class debut for county side Glamorgan more than 12 years ago. It is in the T20 format, however, where he has truly made his mark. Playing for current county Derbyshire in this year's T20 Blast, Donald amassed 489 runs at a strike rate of 230.66. Across the last two Blast tournaments combined, only three players have outscored his tally of 938 runs: James Vince with 1038, Will Smeed with 1015 and D'Arcy Short with 997.

Donald also impressed in this year's edition of The Hundred, striking 38 off 19 balls for Trent Rockets in the final at Lord's. Those performances earned him his maiden England cap in Southampton, where he featured in every match of their 3-0 T20I series victory over Sri Lanka. He has since been named in England's T20I squad for five matches against Australia across November and December, scheduled before the men's Big Bash gets underway.

“We are incredibly excited to have Aneurin join our BBL squad this season. He showed enormous potential during his time with Trent Rockets during The Hundred and then again for England in the subsequent T20I series against Sri Lanka. I’m sure our members and fans will enjoy watching Aneurin’s aggressive style of batting on full display at ‘The Furnace’ this season," Scorchers general manager Kade Harvey said in an official statement.

What does Perth Scorchers' BBL squad look like now?

Donald joins a Scorchers group that head coach Adam Voges has now locked to 15 of a possible 18 players on the primary list, including the maximum three overseas players. Donald and Crawley will feature alongside fellow English import Calvin Harrison this summer, while Western Australia local Joel Curtis has also been added to the BBL roster, giving the team two wicketkeeping options for the season ahead.

With Crawley already in the squad as a replacement for Allen at the top of the order, the Scorchers could potentially field an all-England opening partnership this season. Where Australia T20I captain Mitch Marsh fits in a top order now stacked with options will be one of the key decisions for Voges ahead of BBL|16.
