Arsenal winger Christos Tzolis is “hoping” to be named on the substitutes’ bench for the game against Liverpool on Sunday evening, according to reports.
The Sun claim that the forward is pushing hard so he can make the matchday squad for the trip to Anfield.
Tzolis has been sidelined since the last international break, having sustained a hamstring injury in Greece’s Nations League fixture against the Netherlands.
Manager Mikel Arteta said earlier this month that the 24-year-old was a “few weeks” away from making his comeback, but it looks like he could be back available slightly earlier than scheduled.
Arteta has rotated between using Eberechi Eze and Noni Maduke on the left-hand side of the front three in Tzolis’s absence.
However, Madueke is now having to cover on the right after Saka was ruled out with a quad injury for several weeks, leaving Arteta with few alternatives to Eze, whose form has been rather poor. Tzolis’s return to fitness will, therefore, be welcomed by his manager.
Mikel Merino (illness), Declan Rice (hamstring) and Madueke (ankle) were all absentees from the squad for the shock defeat to Fleetwood Town in the Carabao Cup on Tuesday night, but the trio are expected to be back in contention for the Liverpool fixture.
Riccardo Calafiori is a doubt for the trip to Liverpool after the Italian picked up a knock against Everton, and William Saliba (back) is set to make his return to training within the next two to three weeks if everything goes to plan with his recovery.
As mentioned, Saka is set to be out for an extended period. Reports suggest he might not be fit before the start of December, meaning he could miss some important fixtures, including the match versus Manchester City at the end of next month.
