The 11 worst players of the post-Fergie Man Utd era who cost a combined £474m

Express Sport looks at the worst players to have represented the Red Devils since 2013.

There is no denying that Manchester United are nothing more than a shadow of what they once were under Sir Alex Ferguson. The legendary Scot led the Red Devils to countless trophies, both domestically and in Europe, making them one of football's most feared club sides. However, things have dramatically worsened since Ferguson stepped down from management in 2013.

Playing at Old Trafford was once a daunting task for any team in the country, but nobody fears United any more and they regularly get turned over by teams like Brighton and Bournemouth.

Their shortcomings in the transfer market have played a significant role in their steady decline over the last decade or so. Millions and millions of pounds have been spent on new players, but United have very little to show for it.

In fact, they have splashed close to £2billion on transfers since 2013, only to end up closer to relegation than winning another league title.

Express Sport looks at the 11 worst players in the post-Ferguson era, starting with a bizarre loan signing...

United signed the Nigerian striker on a temporary basis from Chinese outfit Shanghai Shenhua, paying an eye-watering £10.8m loan fee. He scored five goals for the Red Devils in 23 games and was one of their more unusual panic signings of the post-Ferguson era. (Image: Getty)
Manchester United v Crystal Palace - Premier League
Van de Beek never got going at Old Trafford despite United investing £36m to secure his signature from Ajax. He failed to make a lasting impact, playing just 35 times over the span of four years, and is currently plying his trade in Spain's second tier with Girona. (Image: Getty)

Monaco famously inserted a Ballon d'Or clause into the deal that saw Martial join United for around £36m in 2015. His debut goal against Liverpool was one of his only meaningful contributions and he is currently without a club, having been released by Mexican side Monterrey earlier this year. (Image: Getty)

The young Dutchman was tipped for global stardom when he joined United from PSV in a £25m deal. At the time, he was among Europe's most coveted youngsters, but he got nowhere near his full potential at Old Trafford. United eventually decided to cut their losses by approving a bargain sale to Lyon. (Image: Getty)
