Arsenal have little reason to ease off the accelerator after winning the 2025–26 Premier League title, but Mikel Arteta must keep his squad fresh if the Gunners want to defend their crown.
The north London side sit second with 18 points from seven league matches, recording six wins and one defeat. They also occupy seventh place in the Champions League league phase after drawing 2-2 away to Bayern Munich. Bukayo Saka remains central to Arteta’s attack, yet the manager needs reliable cover to protect his most important wide threat across a demanding season.
Noni Madueke offers another option on the right, while teenage prospect Max Dowman offers a glimpse of Arsenal’s academy future. With domestic and European commitments demanding regular rotation, recruiting another young attacker could strengthen the squad beyond the current campaign, particularly with Manchester City and Chelsea also searching for elite prospects.
According to reports relayed from Transfer Feed, Arsenal have shown interest in Borussia Dortmund winger Mathis Albert. The 17-year-old American can operate on either flank, and his contract runs until June 2027. Transfermarkt values him at around £4.3 million, although reports in October placed potential interest from rival clubs at approximately £17 million. Summer reports had suggested offers of up to £13 million.
Albert has made limited senior appearances for Dortmund during 2026–27, including a brief Bundesliga outing against Union Berlin and a DFB-Pokal appearance. He also recorded a goal and an assist in the Premier League International Cup at youth level. For the United States, the winger has four caps and one international goal.
Arsenal should explore a January deal before rival interest drives up the price. Albert’s pace, direct dribbling and ability to play on both wings suit Arteta’s preference for aggressive pressing and wide one-on-one situations. He could eventually ease Saka’s workload, although expecting a 17-year-old to deliver immediate title-winning contributions would be unfair.
A reported £17 million fee would represent a substantial investment in potential, not proven senior output. Arsenal must also consider whether Dortmund would negotiate and whether Albert could earn meaningful minutes behind Saka and Madueke. The club must balance that long-term opportunity against more immediate squad needs rather than spend simply to beat Manchester City and Chelsea.
With Andrea Berta involved in recruitment planning, Arsenal should prioritise a clear development pathway over a bidding contest. If Dortmund offer no realistic route to a January agreement, Arsenal should avoid overpaying simply to secure the teenager ahead of their rivals.
