With just five rounds remaining in the MotoGP 2026 season, the Australian Grand Prix at Phillip Island looms as a pivotal battleground. While the spotlight often shines on the fierce title fight between Jorge Martin and Marc Marquez, Ai Ogura’s resilient charge back to fourth in the championship standings is commanding increasing attention. The SuperFile Trackhouse MotoGP rider arrives in Australia battle-hardened and determined to capitalize on his momentum despite recent setbacks.
Ogura’s journey to Phillip Island has been marked by adversity. After suffering two crashes at Mandalika—first during Friday practice and then a high-speed tumble in qualifying—he emerged with contusions and a fractured finger, compounding a thumb injury sustained during summer training. Yet, the Japanese rider showcased remarkable resolve in Indonesia, clinching second in the Sprint race and recovering from an early fall to finish a strong fourth in the main event. This result was historic, completing Aprilia’s first-ever MotoGP 1-2-3-4 podium sweep, and propelled Ogura ahead of Pedro Acosta in the championship race. He now trails Marco Bezzecchi by 50 points, with 185 still up for grabs.
Reflecting on his previous experience at Phillip Island, Ogura acknowledged the circuit’s challenges but expressed optimism about his prospects this weekend. “I don’t have many good memories here, but 2024 stands out as my best performance on this track,” said the 25-year-old. He highlighted the critical role of tyre management in Phillip Island’s abrasive, anti-clockwise layout and windy conditions. “You have to really work the tyre by pushing the bike hard to get it to the right temperature. Once you feel comfortable, everything falls into place—that’s the key.”
Compared to last year, when he returned to Australia recovering from injury and struggled to find rhythm, Ogura expects a vastly improved campaign. “I’m confident this weekend will be much better. Last year was my first race after injury and only my rookie MotoGP season, so Phillip Island was always going to be tough. Now, with experience and better physical condition, I hope to achieve a stronger result.”
Ogura also praised the thrill of Phillip Island’s high-speed corners, particularly turns one and the final bend. “When you’re fast in these sections, the sensation is incredible,” he explained.
Team Principal Davide Brivio expressed confidence in the squad following a successful Indonesian round that saw both Ogura and teammate Raul Fernandez earn podiums. “Phillip Island holds special memories for us—last year Raul secured our first MotoGP win here,” Brivio said. “We’re hopeful Raul’s injury won’t hinder his performance and that Ai can build on his positive form. We aim to maximize both riders’ recovery and readiness to deliver another strong weekend.”
Current championship leader Jorge Martin of Aprilia Racing tops the standings with 355 points, narrowly ahead of Ducati’s Marc Marquez on 353. Marco Bezzecchi holds third with 309, while Ogura sits fourth at 259 points, edging Acosta by one point.
Phillip Island’s abrasive surface and demanding layout will test Ogura’s renowned strength in the latter stages of races. As he battles through pain and pressure, the Japanese rider stands poised to make a decisive statement on the Australian shores. “I believe the experience I have now with the MotoGP bike will help me a lot this season,” Ogura concluded. “I hope to do much better this year.”
