Rishi Sunak starts historic 100th Scott Trial in Yorkshire Dales
Rishi Sunak starts the Scott Trial.

Rishi Sunak was on hand to start the historic 100th Scott Trial as riders tackled one of the toughest events in motorcycle sport.

The Richmond and Northallerton MP joined competitors, organisers and spectators in the Yorkshire Dales for the landmark running of the famous competition, organised by Richmond Motor Club.

Mr Sunak welcomed competitors before officially starting the event, sending riders off to tackle a demanding course across the Dales.

The Scott Trial combines speed with technical riding ability, challenging competitors to negotiate steep hills, rocky streams and difficult moorland terrain.

Unlike conventional motorcycle trials, riders are judged on both the time taken to complete the course and the penalties accumulated at observed sections.

The event attracts some of Britain’s leading trials riders alongside amateur competitors, with spectators travelling from across the country to watch the action.

This year’s competition was won by 18-year-old George Hemingway, who claimed victory ahead of his older brother Harry.

Mr Sunak said: “It was a real privilege to officially start the 100th Scott Trial and be part of such a special occasion in the Yorkshire Dales.

“The skill, determination and endurance needed to take on this event are remarkable, and it was fantastic to see so many riders and spectators coming together for such a historic competition.

“What makes the Scott Trial particularly special is the enormous amount of work that goes into organising it and the difference it makes to local communities.

“I want to thank Richmond Motor Club, the volunteers and everyone who supports this fantastic event. Congratulations to George Hemingway on his victory and to all the riders who took part.”

As well as being a major sporting occasion, the Scott Trial raises money for local charities and community organisations.

Richmond Motor Club has raised more than £233,000 for charitable causes over the past 15 years.

This year’s beneficiaries include Swaledale Mountain Rescue, Yorkshire Air Ambulance, Great North Air Ambulance, local schools, youth organisations and other community groups.

Ken Wallis, secretary of Richmond Motor Club, welcomed the MP’s involvement.

He said: “We were very pleased that Rishi managed to find time in his busy schedule to come to the Scott Trial and set off the riders for the 2026 event.

“This year marked the 100th running of this iconic time and observation event, and all support in helping to ensure the Scott Trial continues is very welcom
