Barcelona’s victory over Real Betis produced plenty of talking points beyond the scoreline, with Lamine Yamal once again at the centre of the action.
The teenage forward continues to attract attention for his influence in the final third, but his willingness to stand up for teammates has also become part of his growing presence on the pitch.
Hansi Flick’s side have built momentum through their attacking quality, with several players contributing goals and assists during an impressive start to the season.
However, the meeting with Betis also exposed the emotions that can surface when a tightly contested match begins to boil over.
Barcelona had to navigate a fiery second half before eventually securing a convincing result in Seville.
The fallout from that encounter has now extended beyond the final whistle, with the Spanish football authorities reviewing one of its most controversial moments.
Real Betis midfielder Facundo Bernal has been handed a four-match suspension for his confrontation with Barcelona forward Yamal, after the Royal Spanish Football Federation (RFEF) classified the incident as an assault under its disciplinary regulations, as reported by Mundo Deportivo.
The decision follows Bernal’s straight red card during Barcelona’s 5-2 victory at the Estadio de La Cartuja.
The incident occurred in the 54th minute, when tensions escalated after Betis goalkeeper Alvaro Valles attempted to get Fermin Lopez off the ground.
Lamine Yamal stepped in to support his Barcelona teammate, prompting a confrontation with Bernal.
According to referee Ricardo de Burgos Bengoetxea’s report, the Betis midfielder grabbed Yamal by the neck and delivered two consecutive headbutts while the ball was out of play.
The disciplinary committee reviewed Betis’ arguments and footage of the incident before rejecting the club’s initial appeal.
Betis have since confirmed that they will appeal to the RFEF Appeals Committee in an attempt to reduce the ban.
