Ex-Hull City star tips tough week for Sergej Jakirovic's men after Fulham debacle

The legendary former Tigers defender knows only too well how to respond to Premier League setbacks

Oli McBurnie and his Hull City teammates will be keen to put things right on Sunday

Former Hull City promotion-winner Michael Turner expects Sergej Jakirovic's players to endure a tough week as they face a long wait before their next Premier League outing.

City were beaten 1-0 at bottom side Fulham on Saturday, and though the scoreline may suggest a close contest at Craven Cottage, it was anything but that with the Tigers outplayed from start to finish, barely ever getting out of their own half and failing to muster a single shot on target. It was the first time they didn't manage a shot on target in a game in the Premier League since losing 4-0 at Crystal Palace on May 14 2017.

A furious Sergej Jakirovic labelled it the worst performance of what has been a terrific tenure so far, and he'll be looking for a strong reaction when Brentford arrive this weekend.

Jakirovic's players must wait until Sunday afternoon before they can attempt to put their West London horror show behind them, and that, Turner says, will only add to their sense of desperation to deliver a better performance and result.

"It will be a long week for the players," Turner told the 1904 Club podcast. "When you taste defeat, you just want to get back at it and play a game as soon as possible. They've got eight days to wait, which isn't ideal but it gives them the opportunity to train hard and work hard this week on themselves and on the team. There's also the game on Tuesday (against Lincoln) that the players will be playing in so there's an opportunity there as well.

"It's a big game, and for a team not winning in a few games as well. Brentford are a really solid team and they go under the radar. I was actually at their game at home against Sunderland a few weeks ago, and they didn't play very well at home against Sunderland, but from other games I've seen on TV, they've looked really strong. There's no doubt it'll be a tough test for us.

"You feel looking at those next two home games, you want to put points on the board. As I found in my time in the Premier League, you can't always think 'Ah, we'll get four points from them, and it will be ideal'. You have to look at each game as it comes. It's the old cliche.

"Sunday's an opportunity to put in a performance, put the Fulham wrongs right and put points on the board. After that, you go again. You can't look too far in front. There's no doubt the players will realise a reaction is needed going into that game, and the performance they'll be striving for."
