Celtic have been linked with four familiar names ahead of January, with a new report suggesting the club could return to several targets who escaped them during the summer.
Torino midfielder Gvidas Gineitis, Blackburn Rovers pair Balázs Tóth and Ryoya Morishita, and Liverpool defender Luke Chambers are all named in the latest recruitment update from TEAMtalk.
There is considerable history behind some of these names. CeltsAreHere followed Celtic’s interest in both Gineitis and Tóth during the summer, when negotiations failed to produce agreements.
Keep up with the latest Celtic transfer rumours as they happen.
Celtic’s attempt to sign Gineitis continued into the final days of the summer window.
As CeltsAreHere reported at the time, the club’s final proposal was worth €6million plus add-ons. Torino rejected it on August 31.
The Italian side subsequently indicated they would consider a package closer to €8million, including a 10 per cent sell-on clause. Celtic made no improved offer.
The 22-year-old remained in Turin, although he later spoke positively about the prospect of playing for Celtic in an interview with Lithuanian outlet 15min.
Gineitis started the Serie A season in Torino’s team but has since found regular appearances harder to come by.
He remains under contract until 2029, with Torino holding an option for another year.
The latest reporting places the Italian club’s valuation at around £13million, considerably above the package our sources understood Torino would consider in September.
Those figures may reflect different stages of negotiations. There has been no confirmation of a fresh Celtic bid or any reduction in Torino’s demands.
The Blackburn goalkeeper was on Celtic’s radar before Sam Johnstone arrived on loan from Wolves.
CeltsAreHere reported during the summer that Celtic had enquired about Tóth on several occasions, with Blackburn’s valuation proving an obstacle.
His contract situation now offers another possible route.
The 29-year-old Hungarian international is reportedly reluctant to sign a new deal at Ewood Park, with his current agreement due to expire next summer.
Celtic could explore a January transfer at a reduced fee or attempt to arrange a pre-contract agreement for next season.
We reported on October 18 that Tóth remained a player of interest, with Celtic’s long-term goalkeeping position still unresolved.
Johnstone and Viljami Sinisalo have both been used by O’Neill this season. The renewed link with Tóth suggests the club may still be considering a permanent addition.
Morishita was linked with Celtic towards the end of the summer window, when Blackburn were also involved in discussions concerning Reo Hatate.
The 29-year-old Japan international joined Blackburn from Legia Warsaw in August 2025 and has experience playing in attacking midfield and wide positions.
He offers a different profile from some of Celtic’s younger recruitment targets.
Blackburn signed Morishita on a three-year agreement with the option of an additional season, leaving the English club in a stronger negotiating position than they are with Tóth.
Any January move would require Celtic to reach an agreement over a transfer fee.
The summer approach failed to progress, and there is no indication yet that Blackburn’s position has changed.
Liverpool defender Chambers completes the reported list.
The 22-year-old has previous experience of Scottish football, having spent part of the 2022/23 season on loan at Kilmarnock.
He subsequently had spells with Wigan Athletic and Charlton, making 18 Championship appearances for the latter during the second half of last season.
Chambers returned to Liverpool in the summer and was used at centre-back during pre-season, despite predominantly playing at left-back.
He has made just one senior appearance for Liverpool this season, a brief outing against LASK in the Champions League. Much of his other recent football has come with the club’s Under-21 side.
With his contract reportedly expiring next summer, a January move could be either temporary or permanent. Liverpool have not publicly confirmed that he will be allowed to leave.
Celtic already have Kieran Tierney and Landon Emenalo among their left-back options, although Chambers’ ability to play centrally could offer additional defensive cover.
Celtic committed £31.6million to six permanent signings during the summer, according to the club’s September financial announcement.
The four names now being linked with January moves show that several players considered during the previous window remain of interest.
Gineitis was the most advanced pursuit of the quartet, with Celtic making an offer and Torino indicating terms on which a transfer could be considered.
Tóth was another player the club explored before taking a different route in the goalkeeping department.
The links with Morishita and Chambers were less developed, at least publicly.
No fresh bids have been confirmed for any of the four, and there is no suggestion that Celtic intend to sign them all.
For Gineitis, Celtic’s previous negotiations provide a useful indication of what a deal might involve. Whether Torino would entertain similar terms in January is another question.
