NBA Fantasy: Waiver wire adds ahead of week 3
Aaron Wiggins has been a critical piece offensively for the Atlanta Hawks off the bench.

Long-term injuries to Jalen Williams (leg), Anthony Edwards (knee) and Jaren Jackson Jr. (knee) have changed the fantasy basketball landscape. There are also a multitude of injuries to other players that make filling out some lineups difficult. For those who need reinforcements, let’s highlight some players to consider adding in a variety of scoring formats who are all still available in the majority of Yahoo leagues.

9-Category League Targets

Aaron Wiggins, Atlanta Hawks (37% rostered)

The Thunder would probably love to still have Wiggins right now. After trading him during the offseason, Wiggins is now one of the focal points of the Hawks’ second unit. After averaging 22 minutes last season, his new team has him playing 26 minutes a night. That boost in playing time has helped him average 15.5 points, 4.0 rebounds, 1.0 steals and 3.0 three-pointers.

Wiggins only shot 43.1% from the field last season, which is not the norm for him. For his career, he shoots 48.8%. He is back on track in that department, shooting 51.5% through six games. Not only is he attempting more than two three-pointers per game than he did last season, but he is shooting 46.2% from behind the arc. Wiggins could be one of the better sixth men in the league, making him a prime player to add off the waiver wire.

Ja’Kobe Walter, Toronto Raptors (37% rostered)

The return of Kawhi Leonard to Toronto lasted two games before he went down with yet another injury. This time it’s a knee ailment that could force him to miss multiple weeks. Leonard played 52 or fewer games in three of the last five seasons, and even when he does eventually return from his latest injury, it’s always a concern that he could get hurt again as the season wears on.

The Raptors moved Walter into their starting lineup following Leonard’s injury, and he played at least 28 minutes during both games in that role. That helped him average 18.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 4.0 three-pointers. Although he only played 21 minutes a game last season, he showed that he can help with steals and threes by averaging 1.0 steals and 1.5 triples. He shot 40.9% from deep and is shooting 40.7% from behind the arc through four games this season. There’s a path for him to be a valuable fantasy contributor moving forward.

Kelly Oubre Jr., Indiana Pacers (11% rostered)

The Pacers have also been bitten by the injury bug. Ivica Zubac (ankle) has missed the last two games and does not have a timeline for a return, but the biggest blow was the news Wednesday that Tyrese Haliburton (hamstring) will miss at least two weeks. Andrew Nembhard slid over to point guard with Haliburton out against the 76ers on Wednesday, while Oubre started and played a season-high 30 minutes.

Oubre emerged from the game against the 76ers with 15 points, three rebounds, one block and one three-pointer. His overall numbers for the season are down not only because of his limited playing time up until Wednesday, but also because he is shooting 41.5% from the field and 20.0% from behind the arc. With Philadelphia last season, he shot 46.7% from the field and 36.0% from deep while playing 32 minutes a night. His efficiency should improve as the season moves along, and the absence of Haliburton should give him enough playing time to be worth rostering in 12-team and deeper leagues.

Points League Targets

Keaton Wagler, Los Angeles Clippers (31% rostered)

It has been an odd start for Wagler in terms of his shooting stats. His 39.1% shooting from behind the arc is great, but his overall field goal percentage is only 31.6%. He scored 21 points in Wednesday’s loss to the Lakers, but shot just 4-for-15 from the field. Salvaging his performance was him shooting 3-for-8 from deep and 10-for-12 from the free-throw line.

Wagler is averaging 27 minutes off the bench through four games. The Clippers are 1-3 and have one of the least talented rosters in the league. Wagler could eventually move into the starting lineup, which would further elevate his upside. However, his lack of efficient shooting makes him a better option in points leagues than in category formats.

High Score League Targets

Terrence Shannon Jr., Minnesota Timberwolves (37% rostered)

Ayo Dosunmu is in line to start with Edwards sidelined. He played a season-high 32 minutes as a starter against the Warriors on Wednesday, finishing with 17 points, four assists, four steals and three three-pointers. When he combined to average 27 minutes during his stints with the Timberwolves and Bulls last season, he provided 14.8 points, 3.4 rebounds, 3.6 assists, 0.8 steals and 1.8 three-pointers per game, while shooting 51.7% from the field and 87.6% from the free-throw line.

Now that Dosunmu has been elevated into the starting lineup, the Timberwolves need even more production from Shannon off the bench. He scored 19 points against the Warriors and is now averaging 14.2 points for the season. After shooting 40.8% on 1.8 three-point attempts per game last season, he is shooting 44.0% on 5.0 three-point attempts per game this season. There could be nights in which he explodes in the scoring column, making him an intriguing option for this format.

Mikel Brown Jr., Brooklyn Nets (17% rostered)

Egor Demin (leg) only played 10 minutes against the Celtics on Tuesday, which contributed to Brown logging a season-high 28 minutes. He shot just 5-for-17 from the field, but made some big shots late in the game to help force overtime. He finished the contest with 17 points, five rebounds, five assists and four three-pointers.

The Nets have been cautious with their prized rookie as he comes back from an ankle injury that plagued him during the preseason. However, he is already one of the most talented scorers on the Nets behind Julius Randle and Michael Porter Jr. At some point, Brown could find himself in the starting lineup. That time might be now, considering that Demin is out for at least one week. At the very least, Brown should play a lot off the bench. The occasional offensive explosion is likely in the cards, so he’s worth taking a chance on in this format.
