Wells hails professional Weymouth after Barnstaple win

Toby Holmes opened the scoring after just three minutes from the penalty spot before Sam Jackson headed home from a corner in the 15th minute.

Tor Swann completed the scoring after the break, smashing home in the 69th minute after the Barnstaple goalkeeper had initially palmed the ball away.

But Wells felt the margin could have been even greater after seeing his side create a host of opportunities, only to be thwarted by James Hamon in the hosts' goal.

He said: “I thought it was a very professional job for us.

“Good in possession, good out of possession. Really happy with today's performance in everything we did, to be fair.

“Hats off to their keeper. He pulled off some absolutely blinding saves and he was their best player.

“I think, give them credit, they tried and I think we were just professional in what we did.

“We kept things locked and compact out of possession. In possession, we were very good with the ball and looked after it, so really pleased with the performance today.”

The result also gave Weymouth a third consecutive clean sheet, something Wells was particularly pleased to achieve alongside a three-goal haul.

He added: “We were scoring goals, but we'd concede one. Then we don't concede and score one and the fans give you a little bit of stick.

“Today hopefully we've found a balance with three and a clean sheet.

“It's important that we keep the clean sheets. It doesn't matter if you win 1-0 or 3-0. Three points is three points.”

Weymouth's attention now switches to Tuesday's trip to Bristol Manor Farm, with Wells keen to keep the positive momentum going.

He said: “Momentum is such an important part of the game for all teams, whether you're top or bottom of the table.

“Certainly when you're on the highs that we are, it's great. It keeps morale high.

“Everyone's got a smile on their face around the whole club, not just on the pitch. It's a really good place to be at the minute.”

Wells also reiterated the Terras' ambitions for the campaign, identifying promotion as their ultimate objective.

He added: “The league's our bread and butter and it's important that we get three points there when we're in a really good position for it.

“We keep going and promotion is the ultimate goal for the season.

“We'll certainly be focusing on Tuesday and hopefully they'll come and support like they have been, and we'll give them another three points to cheer.”
