No.14 Tennessee takes down rival No.6 Crimson Tide, 26-10

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – No. 14/14 Tennessee used a stifling defensive effort and a balanced offensive attack to claim its third-straight home win in the historic “Third Saturday in October” series, 26-10, over No. 6/6 Alabama in front of a raucous sellout crowd of 101,915 at Neyland Stadium. Leading 12-10 at the half on the strength of four Cooper Ranvier field goals, the Volunteers got rushing touchdowns from senior DeSean Bishop in the third and fourth quarters and held the Crimson Tide (5-2, 3-2 SEC) scoreless over the final 30 minutes to improve to 6-1 overall and 3-1 in the SEC. It marked the lowest point total by UA in the series since 2005 and only the fifth time since 1990 the Tide had failed to tally more than 10 vs. UT.

Bishop recorded his third 100-yard game of the season and the eighth of his career, racking up 159 on 32 carries. Sophomore quarterback George MacIntyre, who finished 21 of 31 passing for 197 yards, guided the Big Orange to touchdowns in two of its three second-half possessions, excluding the three victory-formation plays at the end. Mike Matthews was his most frequent target, turning in seven catches for 85 yards.

The UT defense, meanwhile, allowed only 10 second-quarter points and blanked the visitors in three different frames while surrendering only 201 yards of total offense. Alabama could muster only 54 yards on the ground, its sixth-fewest this century, and was held to 2-of-13 efficiency on third downs. It also had four turnovers, with the Vols scoring points off three of them.

Senior linebacker Amare Campbell led UT defenders with eight stops, including two tackles for losses. Senior strong safety TJ Metcalf was next with six tackles, while senior defensive end Tyree Weathersby and senior linebacker Jeremiah Telander had two sacks each and senior linebacker Arion Carter recorded UT's fifth on the evening. Senior cornerback Kayin Lee and junior free safety Dejuan Lane picked off passes, while Weathersby and junior defensive tackle Xavier Gilliam added fumble recoveries.

Tennessee quickly built a 9-0 lead in the first quarter. The Vols marched 63 yards on their opening possession to seize a 3-0 edge on a 29-yard Ranvier field goal with 10:05 remaining. A little over a minute later, Ranvier made it 6-0 with a 33-yard kick that was set up by a Telander strip sack and a Weathersby recovery of the fumble by Alabama quarterback Keelon Russell. On UT's next drive, Ranvier capped the possession by knocking the ball through the uprights from 41 yards out.

The Crimson Tide trimmed the deficit to two, 9-7, with 10:13 left in the second stanza. After getting the ball at the UT 14 following a turnover, Russell called his own number on the first play from scrimmage following a penalty and scooted 19 yards for the game's first touchdown. The Big Orange punched right back, though, covering 60 yards in 12 plays and countering with a 34-yard kick from Ranvier to extend the lead to 12-7 with 5:19 to go in the period. Alabama registered the half's final points, however, getting a 42-yard Conor Talty field goal to go into the intermission trailing the Big Orange, 12-10.

After Tennessee stuffed a UA fourth-and-one attempt at the UT 40 on the second half's opening drive, the Vols took full advantage of the good field position. On the drive's ninth play, Bishop plowed his way into the end zone from five yards out, capping a 60-yard march to boost the home team's lead to 19-10 with 5:05 to go in the third.

After forcing Alabama to a three-and-out at the outset of the final quarter and taking possession at its own 28 after the punt, Tennessee put together its longest scoring drive of the Josh Heupel era to burn nine minutes, 32 seconds off the clock and put the game out of reach. The Vols clicked off 15 plays and covered 72 yards, with Bishop bullying his way into the checkboard to stake his team to a 26-10 cushion with 3:17 on the clock.  A Lee interception in the end zone ended a late Crimson Tide drive and sealed the victory.
