The wish of a care home resident was granted when he was taken to watch his favourite team.
John Petch, who currently lives at Orchard House Care Home in Wisbech, used to be president of Wisbech Town Football Club for 16 years.
Since living at the home, John has kept saying that he would love to go back and see his hometown club play.
So, with the help of the staff at the football club, who say that “John is a celebrity here”, Orchard House made this possible.
Miranda Robinson, the lifestyle lead, and Jonathon, a carer, were honoured to support John and his wife, Sheila, to the game and for lunch in Bygones before the match on Saturday.
John got to speak to so many familiar faces and had a chat with chairman Paul Brenchley.
John served almost 60 years at the club and stepped down in 2020. Speaking about the day, he said: “It was a fantastic day, and I am really proud the team won while I was there. I would like to thank the staff for making this possible for me.”
Sheila added: “It was so nice to see John so happy and back in a place he loved and enjoyed.”
Jonathon said: “It was great to see John smiling so much and fantastic that Wisbech won.”
Miranda added: “It was an honour to arrange this for John and Sheila. I couldn’t believe how many people remembered John and came up to shake his hand and say hello to him. He really did seem like a celebrity there.”
