‘There was no game’ for Milan after Maignan red card, says Amorim

Ruben Amorim said Mike Maignan's red card "changed everything" in their 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth in the Europa League, adding "there was no game" for his team after that.

Milan's difficult start to their European campaign continued on Thursday at the Vitality Stadium, with the Rossoneri finding themselves behind after just eight minutes.

Koni De Winter was penalised for handling the ball inside the penalty area, with Justin Kluivert stepping up to score from 12 yards, and it only got worse from there for Milan.

Maignan was sent off in the 27th minute after shoving Tyler Adams in the face ahead of a corner, with another spot-kick awarded that Marcus Tavernier confidently dispatched.

Bournemouth were able to add further gloss to the scoreline six minutes from time through Amine Adli, who bent a superb free-kick past substitute goalkeeper Lorenzo Torriani.

The result saw Marco Rose's side become the first English team to win each of their first three games in major European competition since Sunderland back in October 1973.

For Milan, meanwhile, they conceded two penalty goals in the first half of a major European game for the first time since April 2012 against Barcelona in the Champions League, both of which were netted by Lionel Messi.

They were also the first team to face two penalties and have a player sent off in the first half of a major European game since Ajax did so against Chelsea in the Champions League last October, though Amorim said going down to 10 men altered the match entirely.

"The penalty on the corner and the red card changed everything, so it was not a game. It was not a game," Amorim told Sky Sport Italia as quoted by Football Italia.

"We didn't have time to recover from the first penalty. We tried to push in the end, but the third goal made it even harder for us. There was no game.

"It's not about rhythm or Salzburg, there was no game. It is a different team, you cannot have a penalty in that corner, and you cannot get sent off in that situation."

Maignan became the first ever Milan goalkeeper to be sent off in a major European game, while it also continued the Serie A giants' dismal record in England.

They have won just two of their 23 away matches against English sides in major European competition (D7 L14) and remain winless on the road against such opposition in the UEFA Cup/Europa League (P7 D3 L4).

But Amorim said costly errors proved to be Milan's downfall, adding: "That is true, we cannot do that.

"We need to keep 11 players on the pitch, there are more experienced players, but now we need to recover and get ready for the next game.

"We have to run a lot with one less player, try to press at the right moment in that situation, so it was a negative in all respects."

The encounter on Thursday marked 100 days since Amorim took charge of Milan, who are unbeaten (W4 D3) and fourth in Serie A ahead of facing Udinese this Sunday.

"This is part of the journey. If you look at the history of Milan, we are at a different point," Amorim said of his tenure.

"Fabio Capello is talking about the history of Milan, and I understand that, but we must be realistic.

"I appreciated the way we fought, we tried to do something, to help each other out, so we must learn from these moments, realise this is football."
