The San Francisco 49ers brought in Raheem Morris after Robert Saleh left to become the Tennessee Titans’ head coach, and Morris has made his presence felt in the Bay Area, helping shore up the secondary while pushing quarterback Brock Purdy to play more aggressively and get the ball out on time. Having already held two full-time head-coaching jobs, along with a stint as the Atlanta Falcons’ interim head coach in 2020, the 50-year-old coach has naturally faced questions about whether he’d want another shot at the top job.
His response, however, challenged the usual mindset around pursuing a head coaching role, and fans appreciated this perspective.
Morris knows the demands of being an NFL head coach. He led the Tampa Bay Buccaneers from 2009 to 2011 before returning to the role with the Falcons in 2024. He remained in Atlanta through the 2025 season before joining the 49ers as their defensive coordinator.
Given his resume, another head coaching opportunity could be in his future. But Morris pushed back against the idea that becoming a head coach is the ultimate measure of success in the NFL.
“We have somewhere in society been screwed up, right? We have got this illusion in our head that everybody’s a head coach. Guys, there are 32 head coaches in the National Football League,” Morris told reporters Friday when asked if he wanted to become a head coach again.
“There are 32 defensive coordinators, and there are 32 offensive coordinators, and there are 32 people for everything we do. There are 32 media members who do what you do. We are blessed, and you couldn’t have a better job than all of us,” he added.
Morris’ comments resonated with many fans online.
“He’s so right. Guys have to realize they are great at being coordinators but struggle as head coaches. It takes a unique personality to be head coaches in the NFL,” one X user wrote.
“My man. Pay that guy handsomely to be the best DC in the business,” another wrote.
Morris’ comments come as the 49ers continue to reap the benefits of his work on defense. San Francisco is off to a 5-0 start, its best since 2023, with the defense playing a key role in the team’s early success. The Niners currently rank No. 4 in the league with a PFN Defense Impact Score of 78.5.
Morris has even helped push Purdy to improve, giving the quarterback challenging looks during training camp to sharpen his game.
Head coach Kyle Shanahan has voiced his support for Morris, saying he’d like the defensive coordinator to remain in San Francisco for as long as he continues coaching.
Many fans weighed in on Morris’ apparent contentment with his current role, with some hoping the 49ers keep him around for the long haul.
“Give him a lifetime contract as DC then,” one X user said.
“Raheem has found his spot. He is a DC,” another tweeted.
Morris and the 49ers now turn their attention to Monday’s Week 6 matchup against the Washington Commanders at home. A win would keep their unbeaten start intact as they look to carry that momentum into their road game against the Falcons.
