Manchester United threw away a deserved first-half lead as they were held to a draw by fierce rivals Leeds United on enemy turf. The visitors went into the fixture after a turbulent week that was dominated by more off-field drama following the defeat to Atletico Madrid. They would have been desperate to restore a feel-good factor by claiming all three points at Elland Road, but couldn't make the most of their early dominance.
United produced their best half of the campaign so far to take a narrow lead into the half-time interval, with Bryan Mbeumo turning home a low cross from Youri Tielemans to open the scoring. However, they couldn't maintain their momentum and were pegged back when Dominic Calvert-Lewin steered the ball in following a corner. Both teams had chances to grab a winner in the closing stages, but there were no additional breakthroughs and the spoils were shared at the final whistle.
Express Sport rates and slates the United players following today's stalemate...
Senne Lammens - 7
Pulled off a brilliant save to deny Nico Elvedi from point-blank range in the first half. Wasn't to blame for the equaliser after being left with almost no time to react.
Amad - 6
Moved onto the right of a back five when United were out of possession. Offered an attacking threat out wide but saw his influence tail off as the game progressed.
Leny Yoro - 7
Imperious at the back for large parts of the game, heading away several balls into the box and snuffing out danger in key moments. Wasn't afraid to battle in a hostile atmosphere at Elland Road.
Harry Maguire - 6
Defended well for the most part and won the majority of his physical battles, apart from when he was pinned down in the build-up to Calvert-Lewin's equaliser.
Lisandro Martinez - 7
A committed display from the Argentine after a turbulent few days. Showed no sign of a mental hangover following his explosive rant in midweek and the subsequent fallout. Substituted at the break, seemingly because of an injury concern.
Diogo Dalot - 5
Did a lot of running up and down the left flank, but showed little end product in attack and lost concentration a few times while defending.
Carlos Baleba - 6
Disrupted the hosts with his break-up play and helped start attacks with some clever forward passes, but crucially lost the run of Calvert-Lewin for the leveller.
Andrey Santos - 6
Had a decent game in the middle of the park, both in and out of possession. Tidy for the most part, but unremarkable.
Youri Tielemans - 7
Played well further forward and got the assist for Mbeumo's opener with an inch-perfect low cross. Posed a threat in the final third for large spells of the game. Probably his best performance in a United shirt after a difficult start.
Seemed to lose his head early on when he was booked after screaming at the referee. Had a quiet game compared to his usual standards, not offering a great deal in attack.
Bryan Mbeumo - 6
Made up for two missed early chances with a neatly-taken finish to open the scoring. Went quiet in the second half after Leeds equalised.
Noussair Mazraoui - 5
Introduced at half-time in place of Martinez. Lost a crucial aerial battle moments before Calvert-Lewin's goal.
Mason Mount - 5
Came on for Baleba with just under 20 minutes remaining and didn't really do anything of note.
Matheus Cunha - 6
Introduced with eight minutes left on the clock, replacing Tielemans, as United went in search of a winner.
