As the New York Giants suffered a 34-27 loss to the New Orleans Saints in Week 6 on Sunday at MetLife Stadium, running back Cam Skattebo’s time on the field was limited following an underwhelming display. While his heavily reduced playtime could be linked to his below-par first-half performance, the running back revealed postgame that it was a consequence of his crucial overtime fumble in Week 5 against the Washington Commanders.
However, sports commentator and former NFL MVP Boomer Esiason suggested that there could be other reasons behind Skattebo’s reduced playing time. On the CBS Sports Network on Monday, the analystspeculated that the running back could have missed team meetings or failed to execute his assignments in the passing game.
“Some of the issues that are surrounding Cam Skattebo are very interesting, you know. Yes, first and foremost they’re trying to hold him accountable for the fumbling. There’s no question about that. There’s got to be something else going on. I don’t know what else it is. It could be a couple late to meetings, it could be missed the assignments when it comes to the passing game,” Esiason said (0:01).
“There could be a lot of different things that the coaching staff is looking at and I would also think that they’re making him understand you are going to be held accountable now,” he further elaborated (0:33).
Skattebo played just six offensive snaps, all in the first half of the game, and finished with no carries or targets to show for it.
While Skattebo’s costly fumble against the Commanders got him a lot of flak from the NFL world, his next game against the Saints did not prove to be the redemption he would have hoped for.
Having lost his starting spot to Najee Harris, Skattebo featured in just six offensive snaps in the first half, spending a majority of the time on the bench. While the official starting lineups for the Giants’ Week 7 game against the Texans are yet to be out, Skattebo’s back-to-back lackluster performances make it highly unlikely that the running back will start again.
Cam Skattebo’s performance against the New Orleans Saints was the first time in the running back’s NFL career that he ended the game without a single touch.
