Mumbai Indians are heading towards a significant reset ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027 season, with Mahela Jayawardene and the franchise mutually agreeing to part ways. The development comes at a time when the five-time champions are also facing fresh speculation over their leadership, with Rohit Sharma emerging as a possible candidate to return as captain.
Jayawardene's exit marks the end of another chapter in his long association with Mumbai Indians, where he has served in multiple roles over the years. The franchise will now look to chart a new course, while the possibility of Rohit reclaiming the captaincy has added another layer of intrigue to its plans for the next season.
“Mumbai Indians has been a very special part of my journey for over a decade now. The players, coaching team, the incredible support of the #OneFamily and above all the fans have made this an experience I will always treasure,” Mahela said in a statement.
“Mahela has made a significant contribution to Mumbai Indians over the years. His calm leadership, integrity and deep love for the game have meant so much to us. On behalf of the entire MI family, I want to thank Mahela for his immense contribution and unwavering commitment over the years,” MI owner Nita Ambani said.
Jayawardene's contribution to Mumbai Indians extends well beyond his latest stint as head coach. He first took charge of the franchise in 2017 and guided them to three IPL titles in 2017, 2019 and 2020, establishing himself as one of the most successful coaches in the tournament's history.
His understanding of the franchise's culture and ability to build a settled team played an important role in Mumbai's success. After moving into a broader leadership position in 2022, Jayawardene oversaw the franchise's expanding global cricket operations before returning as head coach for the 2025 season.

His departure now leaves Mumbai with an important decision to make as they prepare for the next IPL campaign. Finding the right coaching structure will be crucial for a side that has struggled to recapture its title-winning form in recent seasons.
Rohit's possible return as captain could become another major talking point as Mumbai Indians look to rebuild. India Today earlier reported that the franchise's top management was leaning towards handing the responsibility back to its most successful skipper for IPL 2027.
Rohit led Mumbai to five IPL titles in 2013, 2015, 2017, 2019 and 2020. His record remains unmatched in the franchise's history, making him an obvious reference point as Mumbai assess their leadership options.
Hardik Pandya replaced Rohit as captain ahead of IPL 2024 after returning to Mumbai from Gujarat Titans. The change attracted considerable attention, but Mumbai endured a difficult first season under Hardik, finishing last in the standings. They bounced back to reach the playoffs in 2025, although another IPL title has remained elusive since 2020.
For now, Mumbai's immediate priority will be to settle their coaching arrangements following Jayawardene's departure and determine the direction they want to take into IPL 2027. Whether that involves restoring Rohit as captain or continuing with a different leadership structure remains to be seen.
The franchise has built its reputation on winning titles and developing a strong team culture. Its next set of decisions could prove crucial in determining whether Mumbai can return to the top of the IPL in the upcoming season
