Abdellah Ouazane, a 17-year-old midfielder for Ajax Amsterdam, is drawing widespread attention in Morocco following a detailed portrait published in the French sports daily L’Équipe. The publication highlights the teenager’s rapid rise through club and international ranks, identifying him as a major prospect for the national team’s future. The specialized publication devotes a profile to the young prodigy titled Abdellah Ouazane, la nouvelle pépite du Maroc
, examining his debut with the Moroccan national team, his club career, and the hopes placed in him for upcoming international fixtures.
Born in Amsterdam in January 2009, Ouazane chose to represent Morocco after previously playing in the youth ranks for both the Netherlands and Morocco, according to L’Équipe. His international profile grew during the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations Under-17 tournament hosted in Morocco. He won the continental title and was named player of the tournament after defeating Mali in a penalty shootout following a scoreless draw.
Head coach Mohamed Ouahbi subsequently called up Ouazane for his senior debut with the Atlas Lions on September 25 during a 2-0 victory against Gabon in Rabat. Appearing for the first time with Morocco against Gabon (2-0), Abdellah Ouazane is generating immense hopes in his country. At 17, he became the second-youngest player to feature in an official match for the senior Moroccan national team. Hachim Mastour holds the record, having debuted at 16 years old against Libya in 2015.
At the club level, Ouazane was promoted to the Under-19 squad of Ajax during the 2024-2025 season. Although a transfer to Real Madrid was discussed near the end of that campaign, Ajax integrated him into their first team in the summer of 2026 under Spanish manager Michel (Miguel Ángel Sánchez Muñoz).
Ouazane made an immediate impact during his first official appearance with the Ajax first team in the Dutch Championship on August 16, scoring a goal with a curling strike into the top corner from outside the penalty area following a high pressing recovery. While tactical setups have occasionally deployed him on the flanks to develop his pace and defensive tracking, coaching staff view him primarily as a central or attacking midfielder.
Nabil Baha, who coached Ouazane during his time with the Under-17 national team, praised the midfielder’s abilities in comments cited by L’Équipe. Baha remarked that the player possesses a footballing IQ very high for his age
and highlighted his technical and tactical maturity.
Media reports indicate that Ouazane is part of a generation of emerging players eyed for the 2030 FIFA World Cup, which Morocco will co-host alongside Portugal and Spain. The daily emphasizes that Ouazane harbors the ambition to participate in the 2030 World Cup, which Morocco will co-organize with Portugal and Spain.
