ESPN hired Joe Buck and Troy Aikman as its Monday Night Football team in 2022 after several years of booth turnover. More than a year later, Young was among the on-air personalities laid off as part of ESPN’s June 2023 cost-cutting measures.
ESPN hired Joe Buck and Troy Aikman as its Monday Night Football team in 2022 after several years of booth turnover. More than a year later, Young was among the on-air personalities laid off as part of ESPN’s June 2023 cost-cutting measures.
However, while Buck and Aikman have been solid, some were quick to blast the network for ousting Young after an impeccable display of foresight in his College GameDay appearance in Week 7.
After a solid showing on College GameDay, fans were quick to highlight how poor the coverage on ESPN has been and to give Young a boost for his incredible picks during his appearance on College GameDay.
One user highlighted Young’s accuracy during College GameDay, explaining, “Would like to point out that Steve Young was laid off by ESPN in 2023. Young is knowledgeable and well-articulated. ESPN essentially replaced him with sideshow personalities like Jason Kelce and Pat McAfee. Now ESPN promotes Young’s ELITE ball knowledge.”
Another user couldn’t help but agree with him, posting, “He was one of best analysts on TV. ESPN letting him go was stupid!”
Another user couldn’t help but admire Young’s college football analysis, saying:
“Maybe ESPN should’ve kept him as an analyst instead of some of the nonsensical people they continue to put on during the week.”
Another user couldn’t help but compare Young’s picks to ESPN analyst Kirk Herbstreit, who is still employed by the sports network, explaining, “And Herbstreit went 4-5. Guess which one they fired and which one they pay a player’s salary to.”
One fan was fairly harsh to ESPN’s brass regarding the decision to move on from Young in 2023, saying:
“@KirkHerbstreit you guys are clowns. Steve Young was the only smart man on your ESPN shows.”
While ESPN has solid coverage for the 2026 NFL season, Aikman’s future with the network beyond Super Bowl 61 is uncertain. Aikman said he expects to become a free agent after the season and believes ESPN may be headed in a different direction.
With ESPN’s lead NFL analyst role beyond Super Bowl 61 unresolved, could Young make a comeback to the NFL broadcast booth?
