Morocco recorded a second successive victory at the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival on Sunday, beating Costa Rica 4-2, while Tunisia defeated the Democratic Republic of the Congo 3-1 in a Group D meeting between African sides.
Congo-Brazzaville also featured in the day’s second round of results but were beaten 4-2 by Spain, despite having begun their campaign with a win over Tajikistan.
The matches followed morning victories for Algeria, Cote d’Ivoire and Guinea as the African teams continued their introduction to international football in a tournament played eight-a-side.
Morocco followed up Saturday’s 2-0 success against the Philippines with another convincing result at the Hovsan Sports Complex in Baku.
Safouane Bellamine and Said Noufii scored in the opening victory, while the Atlas Cubs added four more goals against Costa Rica. The result gives Karim Meftal’s side six goals from their first two matches and maintains their perfect start.
Morocco were due to face Belize later on Sunday, with the opportunity to extend their winning run in a competition featuring several matches each day.
Tunisia also made it two wins from two by overcoming the Democratic Republic of the Congo 3-1. Amine Antoul and Ayoub Nouri were among the scorers for the Carthage Cubs, with goalkeeper Mohamed Ali Boughanmi also finding the net.
Tunisia had opened the tournament with a 3-1 victory against Nepal. The result was a second defeat for the Leopards, managed by Zico Tumba, after they lost 3-2 to El Salvador on Saturday.
Congo-Brazzaville were unable to build on their opening-day success against Tajikistan, when the Young Red Devils won 3-2. Spain proved too strong in a competitive match, securing a 4-2 victory.
The programme was not yet complete for Tunisia or the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Tunisia were scheduled to play Guinea-Bissau, while Congo-Brazzaville were set to meet Brazil, one of the strongest opponents in their group.
Morocco’s next assignment was against Belize as the tournament continued at a demanding pace. The first edition of the FIFA U15 World Cup and Festival is being staged with multiple fixtures each day, giving the young players a concentrated introduction to international competition.
The matches are also providing the participants with the chance to encounter different styles of play and gain international experience at an early stage of their careers.
