Trenque Lauquen’s delegation experienced a demanding start to the Buenos Aires Finals on Monday, opening the multi-sport provincial tournament under cold but sunny skies across multiple competition venues. Local athletes across youth and senior divisions secured early victories in Newcom, taekwondo, and chess, while facing tough losses in badminton, football tennis, and senior Newcom play as competition schedules pushed forward.
The senior Newcom divisions provided an immediate test of resilience for Trenque Lauquen. In the over-70 category, the Newcom B team secured a hard-fought victory against Pilar. After dropping the opening set, the squad rebounded to take the second and clinched the match in a decisive tiebreak. Meanwhile, the over-60 Newcom A team faced a difficult opening hurdle against Saladillo, falling to their traditional rivals and tightening their path toward a podium finish.
Combat sports and mind games yielded some of the delegation’s brightest moments on Monday. In WTF taekwondo, youth competitors Sofía Rivarola and Aylin de María navigated their elimination bouts successfully to advance to the semifinals. The chess contingent matched that success, with victories recorded by Andres Mordau alongside brothers José and Mariano Costa. Elsewhere in the opening day’s brackets, the women’s boccia doubles earned a win, while Alejandrina Ferreyra and Dionisio Azpiroz picked up victories in table tennis.
Athletics competitors faced a relentless program of preliminary heats and finals at the municipal track. Despite high-intensity performances throughout the daytime schedule, the local delegation concluded Monday’s track and field events without securing any medals. Badminton and football tennis entries also dropped their opening matchups, adding to a mixed ledger of results for the municipal contingent as the multi-sport event entered its first full day of action.
Competitions resume early Wednesday morning with a heavy slate of events running across multiple venues. The Wednesday program opens at 8:00 a.m. local time (11:00 UTC) with handball against Lanús, alongside Ema Martinez in the shot put and Josue Rojo in the high jump. Subsequent morning sessions feature PCD football, Newcom B against Coronel Suárez, Rebecca Bathis in figure skating, and sub-14 male taekwondo.
Afternoon brackets will feature youth football, basketball, beach volleyball, and Basque pelota against Luján at 3:30 p.m.
