Carrick on Martinez 'drama', Diallo social media post and Wilcox

Manchester United boss Michael Carrick has been speaking to the media before Sunday's Premier League game against Leeds United at Elland Road (kick-off 14:00 BST).

  • Carrick explained his stance on Lisandro Martinez's outburst following their Champions League defeat by Atletico Madrid: "It is done. We've moved on from it. It really isn't a source of drama for us. It's one of those things where he just came out and acknowledged the situation."

  • When asked how he reacted when he saw the comments, the United boss replied: "I understand emotion at times, especially when we ask for passion and fight as managers. We want our players to care, but there's a way of doing that and that has already been acknowledged."

  • The players have "genuinely moved on already" and have been "in really good spirits" during training this week, so the centre-back will be part of the squad on Sunday.

  • On a strongly worded social media post from Amad Diallo calling the defeat a "disgrace": "It is a situation where there are other ways of expressing that opinion. It shows the boys here care an awful lot, but there are ways of doing it. We have to channel our emotion in the right manner."

  • There is uncertainty over Luke Shaw and Kobbie Mainoo's availability. The pair picked up injuries against Tottenham and did not travel for the midweek Champions League fixture.

  • Benjamin Sesko is still sidelined after the recurrence of a shin injury which kept him out of pre-season. Carrick confirmed the striker needs to "undergo a couple of checks" before the club will "issue any update on timelines".

  • After going five games without a win in all competitions, asked if he needs results to keep his job, he said: "I don't need results, we all need results. It's not just about me. Manchester United is a lot bigger than any individual, it always has been. Whatever is best for the football club is the most important thing, so please don't think it's about me."

  • Carrick wouldn't be drawn on whether or not he believes technical director Jason Wilcox should be speaking out more, however, he added: "I've got absolutely no problem with how he acts. We're all in this together, we're a really tight-knit group, so I'm happy to face any questions."

  • The conversation he had with the club's hierarchy after Martinez's comments was "pretty simple". Everybody "understood the situation" and "recognised the really good feeling inside the club", despite things "not going to plan" as of late.

  • He added: "There are a lot of things people will say, but it doesn't mean they understand what's going on here. Just because ex-professionals say stuff, it doesn't mean it's the truth. The truth is that the squad is in a fantastic place, better than I've seen it in a while, actually. I'm telling you how it actually is."

  • Daniel Farke has done "a fantastic job" of turning Leeds United into "a really good Premier League team" since winning Championship promotion in 2024-25.

  • On the rivalry between the Red Devils and the Whites: "There is big history between the two clubs, that's what makes these types of games special. We have to embrace all of it. It will be a fantastic game and atmosphere - and we will be ready for it."
