Benfica volleyball coach Sakis Psarras called for an immediate, total overhaul of his squad’s mindset and approach following a decisive 3-0 defeat to Sporting in the Supertaça Nacional final on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at the Pavilhão Cidade de Viseu. The straight-sets loss—with set scores of 25-22, 25-19, and 25-22—handed Sporting their third Super Cup title and left the Encarnados searching for answers after years of falling short against their cross-town rivals, A Bola reported.

Sporting Extends Domestic Dominance in Viseu

Sporting controlled the tempo from the opening whistle in Viseu, executing aggressive serves and capitalizing on Benfica’s reception errors. According to Sporting’s official club reporting, setter Sergey Grankin orchestrated an attack featuring Jorge Alayo, Jonas Aguenier, and Kelton Tavares to secure the club’s sixth Super Cup trophy overall. The victory comes just a week after Sporting captured the Iberian Cup in Melilla and Guaguas, cementing an early-season rhythm that has left domestic opponents struggling to keep pace.

Psarras Points to Psychological Hurdles and Technical Gaps

Speaking to reporters after the match, Psarras offered a blunt assessment of the gap between the two sides. He conceded that Sporting held a clear advantage in technical execution, tactical discipline, and psychological stability throughout the encounter. The Benfica manager added that the cumulative weight of losses to Sporting over the previous two seasons has begun to erode his players’ belief on the court, creating a pressure loop that hinders their performance during high-stakes derbies.

The Demand for a Comprehensive Mental Shift

Rather than pointing to isolated tactical errors, Psarras insisted that superficial adjustments will not suffice. He emphasized that the club must alter its fundamental approach to competition, resilience, and pressure. Official match statistics from Benfica’s recap showed the team fighting back to narrow deficits—such as pulling within 18-16 in the second set behind efforts from Abouba Dramé and Kelvi Geovani—only for unforced errors and Sporting’s block to shut down any potential comeback.

Upcoming National Championship Fixtures Await Benfica

With the Super Cup trophy safely in Sporting’s hands, both squads turn their attention back to the league campaign. Benfica will look to rebound on home soil when they host AA São Mamede for their 2026/27 Campeonato Nacional debut on Saturday, October 24, 2026, at 17:00 local time at the Pavilhão n.º 2 da Luz, according to the club’s official schedule. Até ao último aplauso, Viseu foi também casa do Benfica, mantendo-se firme a ligação entre a equipa e os adeptos.
